  1. 1. I don't know about "millions" but for sure tens of thousands have died. None of this had to happen if Russia didn't attack Ukraine. 2. This war only exists because Putin attacked a sovereign nation. A nation which wants to be free, and a democracy. As Americans, we should support democracies everywhere. 3. Freedom has a price. You can pay that price in taxes, supporting democracies abroad, or you can ignore the struggle for democracy beyond our borders and wait until the fascists are at our borders. The latter cost isn't in dollars, it's in blood. Those of us who support freedom would rather spend a few dollars in taxes than a few pints in blood.

  4. The assertion that Trump or Biden would have handled a close election the same way is ludicrous. If we're talking checks and balances, the cornerstone of American democracy has been the peaceful transfer of power, and Donald Trump is the opposite of that. In addition to not attending the inauguration ceremonies -- unlike disgraced popular vote winner Hillary Clinton and every other defeated candidate-- Trump has spent every waking hour spreading election falsehoods, and hailed his J6 supporters as heroes and martyrs while literally promising pardons and vengeance. Although now that you mention it, maybe Al Gore was a big pu&&y for conceding an extremely close election for the "good of the country." However I feel about abortion, I feel more strongly about Supreme Court candidates assuring Congress they will not seek to overturn Roe v Wade in order to secure their nomination. After which, they will very much seek to overturn Roe v Wade because each Supreme Court nominee was handed to Donald Trump on a short list by the Federalist Society, whose main criteria was the judge's willingness to overturn Roe v Wade. It's always fun to pretend it's simply about states rights. By "popular vote" I did not mean the the national popular vote, but the ability of those controlling the local state house to send their own slate of electors if they don't like the electors chosen by the people. That's been happening. The literal removal of checks and balances. However you want to dance around Donald Trump and Russia and dip back to the Obama administration for strained equivalencies, the emergence of a pro-Russia narrative among conservative media and lawmakers can be traced directly to Donald Trump standing next to Vladimir Putin and telling the world he trusted Putin over the unanimous consensus of America's 17 intelligence agencies. In addition to his attempts to weaken NATO while in office, the former President has a plan to end the war if he returns to the Presidency: just give Russia some land: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/04/05/trump-ukraine-secret-plan/ However you want to limit the most insane wing of Republican party to Marjorie Taylor-Greene and some ragtag extremists, they have assumed the power to make or break the Speaker of the House -- not exactly nothing. And while you may not want to call them "leadership" or even "the face" of the Republican Party, it's kinda moot if both the face and leadership of the Republican Party is the utterly bats#!t Donald Trump, doling out favoritism to the most bats#!tty loyalist, while the supposed mainstream of the party angrily rejects a Ron DeSantis or Nikki Haley lifeboat. Presidential immunity is an interesting dilemma, although I think most of us plebes can understand the lines you can't cross, and that trying an ex-President for his criminal civilian behavior does not threaten national security and the social order in the way trying an acting President might. But maybe if we spend enough time musing about the complexities of Presidential immunity the Supreme Court can postpone any decision that might affect the Presidential candidate who stacked it. Why is it so hard for you to accept that everything you believe is horribly wrong?

  5. • Donald Trump was exonerated and will not be making Putin-friendly decisions in office. • Donald Trump isn't going to fight the results of the 2020 election • And if he does, Donald Trump isn't going to do something crazy, like instigate a violent coup. • And if he does instigate a violent coup, the Republicans will quickly distance themselves from him. The "election hoax" rhetoric will fade to oblivion and the GOP will return to issues-based campaigning. • As they distance themselves from Trump, the GOP will embrace saner alternatives, like Ron DeSantis. • Trump's Supreme Court appointees are reasonable folks who made it clear they're fine with the Roe v Wade precedent. Why are you freaking out? • The Marjorie Taylor Greene wing will not exert any significant influence on the party itself. • What paranoid world do you live in where Donald Trump inserts his daughter-in-law as the RNC chairwoman, and funnels the money to himself? • Our electoral college system held, and only a worrywort would think red state legislatures might take a lesson from 2020 and reengineer the rules to make it easier to overrule the popular vote. • And if they do, it probably won't come into play. Because Biden is going to win so handily over Joe Biden, even MAGA will accept defeat and work together to advance this great country of ours. • We remain a nation of laws. It's not like the Supreme Court is going to look America in the eye and say a President is immune from the laws we citizens must follow. That's a dictatorship, man. • And when the guy I voted for twice promises a scorched earth, day-one dictator second term, he's just kidding to get you libs riled up. What has he ever done to make you think he'll go off the rails and take as many people as possible with him?

  10. I'd be willing to bet money most of these kids have no idea that Hamas doesn't believe that Israel has a right to exist, that Hamas has declined the opportunity for the creation of a Palestinian state, or any number of things. All of this does not excuse Israel for conducting a poorly thought through and unnecessarily violent war. If there's ever a time to not care about either side in a conflict, it's one where neither side is interested in actual political resolutions to the underlying causes.

  12. In what way is this OK? Truly baffled by this statement. Ukraine is a sovereign nation who wants to live in a democracy. Russia is a puppet state ruled by an autocrat. In what context should Americans, who love democracy and freedom, not want to give a democracy our full support against autocracy?

Assessing Biden’s time in office so far, 61% say his presidency thus far has been a failure, while 39% say it’s been a success.

  14. I'm interested to know what offensive pieces and guys on the OL that you're not sold on? From what I've seen we've significantly upgraded at the WR position which was our second biggest flaw on offense a season ago behind only the abysmal QB play. I get the concerns with RPO and bubble screens considering our recent history with them, but the guys we've brought in this offseason are gamechangers compared to what we've had in the past. Fidone sees a completely different picture than last year when he catches an arrow off an RPO and now turns upfield to any combination of Banks, Bonner, Neyor, Boerkircher, and Coleman (when healthy). Opposing teams have NEVER had to respect that play in the past and could comfortably cheat toward the box. Then you add in the handful of deep-threats we now have and this is a completely different offense from anything we've seen since. I'm not saying we're going to be the number one offense in the BIG, but I think you're looking at a ceiling of top 5. And while I'm not drooling over any of our RBs I think all of them offer at least one skill that is above average. If you can't stuff the box (lol) against us, then tackling guys like Dowdell and Gabe (if he can stay healthy) becomes a tall order come fourth quarter. And Emmett has put on some good weight this offseason and is not afraid of contact either. This team doesn't need a 20+ carry back a game. We need down-hill runners that can wear down a defense in the second half, do their job in pass pro, and don't have bricks for hands. And so far I've been pleased in all of those regards. This will allow plenty of single coverage looks and I'm pretty confident in the WRs on this roster to go make some plays. I believe this is the most stacked WR room we've had in a while. And if you came out of that scrimmage (glorified practice) thinking anyone but DR is the guy, you either watched it blindfolded or are personally related to the other two QBs. Don't get me wrong, I think HH is a solid backup with an upside to see some QB-power around the goal line (although I'm not a fan of switching out guys down there) and I think Kaelin has a really bright future. But DR is special. There will definitely be growing pains but his skill set and intangibles are elite. Everyone talks about DR's arm talent and rightfully so, however, I've been just as impressed with his pocket presence and field vision. That stuff is so hard to teach, and the casual fan has no idea how difficult it is to go through reads while correctly sensing and reacting to the oncoming rushers.

  16. IDK, the checks and balances have been pretty darned insufficient here the last few years. If they were working properly, DJT could not and would not be a viable presidential candidate. Obviously there are some flaws or something is broken.

  17. Nebraska was the clear leader two weeks ago. After the Alabama OV, "experts" went with the tide because they couldn't see Dawson picking us over them. Raiola (His visit host) and HCMR are recruiting him personally. His dad is a coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and his mom has hit it off with Dylan's mom. Nebraska also has a clear vision for him on D compared to other schools (Jack position). Proximity matters here too. All in all, I think Nebraska is going to get him.

  19. One of the biggest disappointments in the spring game is Alvano missing FGs. That's something that is much less affected by the format of the game and it's probably way less of a stress situation than he will see all year next season. And, he shanked some. That's concerning. He has some work to do this summer.

  23. This entire offense is being set up for the pocket passers and they're training Haarberg to work within that. They're not setting this offense up like last year and training the new QBs to work within that style. Everyone needs to take last year's tape and burn it. Yes, it's the same offense in the sense it's the same language and organization and so forth but that QB heavy run style that we were forced to adopt by circumstance is completely gone. You may see an occasional zone read here or there, especially if Haarberg is needed for a sustained time, but Raiola and Kaelin are just not built for that style of play. That's why what Haarberg did this spring was so impressive. He's being asked to play in an offense built for someone else, and I think he's doing a great job. But, there's no QB controversy here. Rhule is just dipping into his psychological bag of tricks to get what he wants from these guys. He knows exactly who his starting QB is.

  26. Another fun fact. You, on these various pages of HB, have chosen to downplay most every R misdeed and have defended to ridiculous extents the wrong side of virtually every issue that your favored GOP party holds dear. Yes, you’ve finally come around to reluctantly denouncing Trump but you still fail to acknowledge the soul rot and destruction he and MAGA has left in your party. Okay, maybe this isn’t a “fun” fact but it is a fact nonetheless.

  30. My Dude, I have not said a civil war or a Civil War is likely, just that it's more plausible than it has been in my lifetime and deserves attention. I mean, I opened with a joke about drawing sabers and Ken Burns. Stop trying to conflate what I've gone to the trouble of qualifying. But seasoned observers even older than me agree the current partisan climate and continued fueling of Donald Trump's ascendency is unprecedented and dangerous. And everyone on Earth agrees you've been wrong about the things we shouldn't worry about. The Archy move is to say it doesn't rise to the level of Gettysburg, so relax! We could call it a civil war or just a wacky kerfuffle, but if you play out either a Trump victory or loss it's not too hard to see some ugly stretches ahead. Can you imagine college kids closing campuses across the nation and getting armed responses? Well you don't need much of an imagination to see that playing out on a larger scale if either side believes the other has upped the stakes in partisan revenge. Savvy observers have noted that THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THE LEADING CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT HAS PROMISED. Which part of scorched earth dictatorship don't you understand? Now if those are the ravings of an unhinged man who has lost most of his followers, and the bullwarks of democracy will step in and protect us, I'm willing to relax. Just saying there's plenty evidence to warrant legitimate concern, as many on this thread have outlined for you. If you want to do your part, I'm sure you will join hands with Liz Cheney to rescue the GOP from its worst impulses.

  31. You might be right, those MAC schools might not be paying much or anything at all. I have no idea, I think a lot of the numbers we hear are totally inflated. I think CBB is where the real money is being spent, you really only need 2 or 3 "money" players to have a good team.

  36. You're putting it past Trump to do that especially if he doesn't have sane people around him? That's some pretty thin ice for democracy to skate on especially if the court rules in his favor on immunity. He'll be even more emboldened next time without the possibility of any consequences. How about another hypothetical. One which really isn't hypothetical since his minions are tits deeps in it in Arizona. What about a president and his allies putting forth a slate of false electors?
