Trump won all six of those states in 2016. “Any major presidential debate is a chance to change things,” Whit Ayres, a GOP pollster, said Wednesday. “You try to persuade some people who are not already for you to be for you and the debate last night didn’t do that.” It will be hard for Trump to win re-election without appealing to at least some college-educated, suburban, female voters. But the president’s combative attitude, his refusal to denounce a White supremacist group and his suggestion he wouldn’t ensure a peaceful transition marred any effort to do so.
