  1. @84HuskerLaw if you expect the team to be polished and clicking in a new offense and defense after 14 practices, then your expectations are way too high. The team does have a long ways to go, as they were 4-8 last season for a reason. Regarding the offense, Frost said the game plan was relatively vanilla. This probably means very few true RPO's, double-moves by the WR's, or other more complex plays. All of the passing to the sideline sets up the deep pass off of that. Frost isn't going to show that in the Spring game, and his QB's may not be quite ready for the read off that type of play. I think the o-line could be an issue this season, but they are showing more "want-to" and effort than they did the last half of 2017. One of the big things the team struggled with yesterday was getting the signals in and understanding all of the signals. That will improve greatly during the season. If you think the team will not improve at all from the Spring to the actual season, then you are sorely mistaken.

  2. What I'm hoping is that we have a good enough lead in some of these games we get to see some true game experience for the non starter instead of squeaking out each win

  3. This doesn't look like a lame ass Riley offense.

  4. It's not pessimistic, it's just flat out incorrect. Anybody that thinks this is like Riley's offense doesn't have enough knowledge to even form an opinion that could be deemed pessimistic. That's blunt, but the offensive training wheels are off. This is a big time offensive scheme, not the vagabonds we've been forced to use for so very long. It's an RPO offense, those screens are there as an extension of the run game. Attaching something like a TE screen on the backside of an inside zone is how you "block" a backside DE in this offense. They exist for a specific purpose. Why do some people have a sense that Honas underperformed compared to the lofty expectation? Because he was forced into coverage a lot. Slot/TE/RB...he had to account for a lot of routes. If he was playing against Riley's offense that put 27 people in the box for who knows what reason, he can fire off the ball all day...which when given the chance he did pretty well. Remember this when Iowa and Wisconsin come around. The gravy train has left the station for opposing linebackers. There are a lot of details to fix, but everyone that wants to say something about this offense owes it to themselves to buy a remote with a pause and rewind button. Really go slow and see why a portion of a play exists and look to see what problem it solved.

  5. If he's the best QB, he should play.

  6. You mean we might not scrap the run game because they can't block both running plays in the playbook? And we might not ask them to pass block for 5 seconds every play? That would be nice.

  7. I didn't vote because I'm not that skilled at making fine line evaluations on players, especially QBs. But I will say this, regardless of who wins the starting job, it will be nice to know that if the starter goes down with an injury, the entire fanbase won't go "oh crap, we're screwed"......good to have skilled depth.

  8. Under Riley he would be running 15 yard outs all day...to the wide side of the field.

  10. One thing that I haven’t seen posted or maybe I missed it but hats off to POB for being on the sideline in street clothes rooting and cheering on his former teammates. Takes a true class act to do what POB did even after transferring. He didn’t have to do that but did anyways....Once a Husker always a Husker!!!

  11. You're talking to the staff who took in a dude with one hand and turned him into an All-American draft pick LB. I'll give them some leeway on "development" of players.

  15. I grew up in a smaller town in NE Nebraska. We viewed prom as a "passing of the torch" from the Seniors to the Juniors; all were expected there. Technically, our Juniors hosted the prom for the Seniors with roasting type speeches from each class president. It is close to the same mindset at my school now, just west of Omaha. Prom is a big deal for a lot of kids. A spring game where the coaches really aren't going to be as accessible as most other spring weekends isn't. If this kid cares, at all, about Nebraska, he knows what the gameday atmosphere is like. edit: Kids don't miss Saturday day activities because they're busy. They miss them because they are resting for Saturday night/Sunday morning. Post Prom goes until 3/4 a.m.

  16. The thing with redshirts though is it can cost you a year of eligibility if the player leaves early. A player has to be 3 years removed from high school to declare for the draft. It doesn't happen often, but you do see some "redshirt sophomores", like Sam Darnold this year, enter the draft. That's a player you only had eligible his RS frosh/soph years. A big reason you don't see more of these redshirt sophomores as early draft entrees is because so many of these guys never redshirted at all. I'm not remotely suggesting Martinez is an early entry based on one spring game, but the QBs under Frost at Oregon and UCF put up the kinds of numbers that would have made them considerations for doing so. One final note on this subject: the NFL for the last several years has seen record numbers of early entrants, and there is a good reason why. When the league changed its rookie contract structure several years ago, it made the second contract of a player's career the big contract. There isn't nearly the disparity in pay for the top guys vs a mid round pick that there once was. It's better for a player to enter earlier and start the clock than stay a year longer and hope his stock improves.

  19. I think where this defense will thrive is when NU has a lead and the other team starts to press a bit...that usually results in more mistakes and turnovers and that 17 point lead quickly turns into something insurmountable.

  20. I’ve heard this before. What do we want to wait for if he is already the better guy? I why not play the guy suited for your offense if he is already the best guy? Not saying he is for sure, but if Frost thinks he is, he isn’t going to say, alright, we’re going to RS you and start our 2nd best QB.

  21. It seems that you're hung up on the content of the tweet. That was never my argument. I was arguing the merit of the video, which seemed to nullify the "I feared for my life" excuse that's often given when people of color are killed. Would you rather I post something like this article for the merit of racism in the police force? Is this more to your liking? http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-san-francisco-police-officer-racism-20180410-story.html "San Francisco officer alleges 'blatant racism' in Police Department" "A San Francisco police officer who emigrated from Afghanistan and is Muslim has alleged that he was harassed on the job and retaliated against after reporting racist and homophobic comments by his colleagues. During a news conference organized by San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi, the officer said he experienced "blatant racism" by other officers and sergeants, who suggested he was a terrorist and called him derogatory slurs. He was told to leave his grenades at home, and to inform an officer if his family members were planning an attack so the officer could "put them down gently." In November 2017, the complaint said, the officer was on patrol when a colleague told him: "I want to get guns, and the only people who have guns are blacks and Hispanics. The department doesn't like us to make judgments like that, but if I see a black person behind the wheel of the vehicle, I'll pull the car over and figure out my probable cause later."

  22. I think people were surprised when Honas was put on the White team, because it was assumed the White team was the lower units. I think Honas showed that he will be in the middle LB rotation in 2018. During or after the game, Chinander mentioned that the defense was split more even between the Red and White squads, while the majority of the top 2 unit guys on the offense were on the Red team.

  23. I don't get the fear of Martinez getting injured or making him redshirt just so that he's better as a 5th year senior. I am of the opinion that you play the best guys regardless of having a redshirt available. If Frost is doing his job, he will have another QB ready to take over the starting job after Martinez graduates.

  24. That's certainly the pessimistic view of things. My view is they've only been practicing with the new staff and new schemes for a few weeks and already look as good as last year's team. I also have an inkling that they might get a bit better before fall...

  26. Gebbia: 12-of-17 for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns Martinez:10-of-13 for 114 yards and 1 touchdown in the air, 60 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground Bunch: 8-of-14 for 89 yards and 1 touchdown Vedral: 6-of-12 for 53 yards and 0 touchdowns Martinez had the best spring game, although he did miss a couple of throws. Gebbia is the best passer, but he did miss a wide open TD throw. I think Bunch might be more in the mix than what people think. Even though this is largely the first time we've seen these guys on the field, I don't think the spring game performance will make much difference to Frost. I gave my vote above to Bunch because I think it's a tighter race than what we realize and the voting seems to lopsided. All three, errr, four looked good yesterday. Now the kicking game, well that's another matter. lol

  27. Obviously keeping the best players in the state is very high priority. Frost has explicitly stated as much. That doesn't mean they're bigger than the program. I'm not sure how anyone can see what Harrison Phillips did at Stanford and still think we can afford to let these types of players go elsewhere. Absolutely must get.

  28. After watching the 40 minute replay video of the game, I must say I am more alarmed than reassured. I thought the game looked too much like organized chaos in many ways. Too many missed blocks, misreads, etc. The line of scrimmage seemed lost and confused on both sides (offense and defense). I agree there are way too many sideline passes and not enough down field for my liking. Those passes tend to get picked for 6 and haven't worked well for NU for a long long time. I want to give the team more time to install the new system but so much of this offense (dare I say it) has similarities to Riley's schemes with far too many jail break and quick screens and not enough slants and deep outs or even sideline outs. Yes, the QB keepers on the 'option' plays is new but the passing game is too similar. The line of scrimmage seems out of control and maybe it's just the Frost offense and defense 'at work' but the game is far too 'sandlot' and disorganized. I hope I am wrong after getting my very first taste of the new systems and schemes and methods but I am afraid having a winning season based on what I say so far is very doubtful. A LONG LONG WAY TO GO. We've got time but I have found that what you see in the spring game typically is what you get in the fall. Rarely do we see a lot of improvement

  29. If we are going to put a lot of value on the spring game, which we shouldn't but this thread will, then one of the biggest things Gebbia struggled with was getting balls out to open targets in space. Likely one, maybe two TDs lost on inaccurate throws to open receivers. Even on some completed balls, they weren't always the prettiest. The thing we didn't see from Martinez was what kind of velocity he has. That's a concern with that shoulder. Hopefully there are no issues. If this is a two horse race, it'll be a fun one. Martinez is much more natural, but it's hard to outwork Gebbia. We saw a lot of 'want to' from those guys today, and that bodes well regardless.

  30. That is the number one takeaway from this game. We ran our offense and defense...this wasn't something thrown together as an exhibition for the fans. How many spring games can we say that? First spring game and the installation on both sides of the ball is ahead of any time in the three years under Riley. This is what a fully fledged offensive system looks like. We can argue execution, or who should play, or any of that kind of stuff, but we can't argue that we finally have competent systems in place and coaches that can install those systems. You almost never see first year staffs that can put that kind of product on the field in the first spring game. We have so far to go, but on the other hand, collectively we are so far ahead of where this team has any right to be.

  34. I saw something that I don't believe, but it is interesting. In this case, the browns take Chubb at 1, giants take Barkley at 2, jets take Darnold at 3, and the browns get the QB they want in Allen at 4. While I don't see this happening, it is interesting to look at different scenarios.

  36. He was a great college player, and had a solid career in the NFL for nearly 10 years, despite being undersized. He will be a head coach in college before too long. NU didn't lose anything when Keith Williams was retained and Walters brought in. If anything, he's better for the current team because he has the experience of working with Frost and they have a close relationship.

  38. I am listening to Big Red Overreaction this morning, and Vrzal makes a good point about the offense and the o-line play. I don't think Frost will "excuse" poor o-line play, but what the design of this offense can do is hide deficiencies within the offensive line. That is something that couldn't be said with recent offenses at NU.
