This Darrell Brooks trial has been crazy. I'm generally in favor of cameras in court rooms, but this is one of the few times I've felt it was a bad idea.

Vala's Pumpkin Patch is quickly turning into the Disney of the Midwest.
Every year since 2016, my work has offered discounted tickets. They used to be $10 each. I just got an email today about the tickets. They're now discounted to $17.99/ticket for a weekday (full price is $19.99) and $34.99/ticket for the weekend (full price is $39.99).
So, for the amount of tickets I was going to buy, I can either save $18 for the weekday or $45 for the weekend. Obviously that's better than full price, but not by much when you consider how much things on the inside cost now, too. Just wild what that place has turned in to. I'm all for capitalism but... geesh.- Show previous comments 11 more

If you were in HS it is probably a fun place to go since there is little supervision and you could totally sneak in vapes and booze.
If you are a mom it is probably a cool place to go just so you can really push the limits of your husband's patience, really send him near that breaking point and then top if all off with getting him and and having super tired cranky kids and letting him know that you are going to bed early since you are worn out. Maybe also letting him know that saying "thank you" to the girl that gave you your change after buying a 14 dollar funnel cake seemed a bit "too flirty"

@Red Fivethats actually the perfect description haha.
I will say that It is regarded as one of the best in the country and there truly is a lot of stuff to do. They have their own train ride, haunted houses, tons of attractions and shows, rentable camp sites/fire pits, etc. It also holds a lot of sentimental value to me because I started going in the early 90s as a kid, but it also used to cost only a couple bucks to get in. Now they just keep expanding every year and finding new reasons to slap another $5 onto admission.

That's about 25% more than Fritzler's Corn Maze here. https://www.fritzlerfarmpark.com/
But Fritzler's has GOATS, acrobatic goats and pumpkin cannons.

Was there a food you hated while growing up, only to realize later you hated it because it was made poorly?
I (think) I have a pretty big one: steak. I really did not like actual steaks growing up... ribeyes, T-bones, the like. But it was because I didn't know anything about steaks and my parents would often cook them medium to well done and served with A1. It wasn't until I got older and had well-cooked steaks that I realized I liked them a lot.

@Danny Bateman I had a somewhat similar experience. My earliest memories of asparagus were out of a can. I didn't "hate" it, but I definitely didn't like it. I remember my dad made oven baked asparagus one time when I was about 10 and I thought "where the hell as this been?"

Just your annual reminder that Die Hard is not, and will never be, a Christmas movie.

If you could eliminate any penalty in football, what would you choose and why?
I'd choose false starts (and the defensive counterpart offsides). You could still blow the play dead, but don't waste time explaining the call or allowing the teams to re-huddle and call in new plays. Just force them to line up and get after it. -
This is not good and very sad...

I hate to speculate, but I'm fairly certain Stothert's husband (a very successful trauma doc) is in his early 70's. Scanner traffic claimed an apparent suicide. -

Has anybody ever shipped anything to Nebraska from Ikea? I think the closest one is in Kansas and items get shipped by a third party. Just curious if you had a positive experience.

Two important Rick Moranis updates:
1) Apparently, he was sucker punched in NYC? Whoever they are should get a life sentence.
2) I was creeping on his IMDB page just now and saw that a a movie called "Shrunk" is in pre-production. I would love to see him back on the big screen.

People really do love to draw attention to a certain sports personality (whose name rhymes with lip clayless) whenever he says something outrageous, but then they wonder why this dude has a job and attracts so much attention.
Even mentioning his name or quoting a tweet to complain about him is what he and ESPN are hoping for. He's a bombastic personality. Want to shut him up? Gotta stop giving him attention. Shows that fail are the ones that don't have eyeballs or interest.- Show previous comments 5 more

“At FOX Sports, we are proud of Dak Prescott for publicly revealing his struggle with depression and mental health,” the network said in a statement. “No matter the cause of the struggles, FOX Sports believes Dak showed tremendous courage which is evident in both his leadership on the Dallas Cowboys and in his character off the field. We do not agree with Skip Bayless’ opinion on Undisputed this morning. We have addressed the significance of this matter with Skip and how his insensitive comments were received by people internally at Fox Sports and our audience.”
-
What Fox should've said:
"Look... we know that Skip has trash takes, but y'all keep giving him attention and making us a ton of money, and what he said wasn't reaaaaaally bad enough to force us to have to remove him. So... I mean yeah we feel bad about what he said, and we'll try to make him not be so mean in the future, but otherwise we're just going to carry on."

Anybody have running shoe company suggestions in Omaha? Now that we won't be going to Lincoln this fall, I'm not sure if we'll be heading up there and stopping by The Lincoln Running Company which is where I used to get new shoes.
-
Has anyone here ever done one of those 'drive a supercar on a local track' experiences? I've long thought about it and it turns out there's going to be one near Omaha Oct. 2-3.

I was at a conference in Texas last year and they had an event at the Circuit of the Americas. Most of the time, they let people take the class and actually get to drive the souped-up Audis they have there. But since there were so many of us for on one evening, they had drivers for the cars and we just got to ride. It was pretty fun just to get to ride in it. I don't know what it would cost to actually get to drive it but I think it would be a blast.

@knapplc just leave the TCS on and make sure it's got good tires
If you don't mind dropping bigger coin there's Bondurant driving school in Phoenix.

I fought the law and won. My complaint I filed against my property tax increase was reviewed and the assessor agreed that I was being way over-valued. So instead of a 32% increase, I only have a 15% increase. I'll take it after remaining stagnant for several years now.

@JJ Husker I don't think the valuation process is near as responsible or trustworthy as we would hope. If I'm being honest, my argument wasn't exactly foolproof. I looked up similar homes, their prices and what they sold for vs. their county valuations in recent years, but I also did it all sort of last minute and there were some obvious flaws in my argument. But what are they going to do, dedicate hours of time to my case? They probably got thousands of complaints and requests for reassessments.
Even the assessor's explanation of why they sided with me felt vague and straight forward. Literally they put one sentence on my report that amounted to 'I looked at the complaint's argument and agreed with them' lol
-
@Enhance I guess what frustrates me is, I know they base the value on comp sales from a set time period and neighborhood. I researched those comp sales and absolutely none of them supported their huge increase. I gave them about ten comps that supported mine and they just said no, our valuation stands. And they won't provide the basis on which they valued it. I could've taken it the next step and appealed it to the county commissioners but I didn't want to commit any more time to it. They were about $80k higher than my highest guess. They just want/need money and that is hard to fight.

I'm inordinately excited about my whet stone that just arrived and sharpening my chef's knife for the first time... ever.
I'm also thinking about ordering a better knife sometime soon, something like a Damascus steel. Anyone have one of those?- Show previous comments 9 more

I have been gifted a Shun; chef, boning, and santoku knives over the past several years. I freakin love them. My Dad is the cook in the family, so I bought him a whet stone for Father’s Day last year and it has been quite useful. I was unsure which one to purchase, so I just went with a less expensive one that had solid reviews.
Side note: If you want to gawk at some fancy Damascus steel and can afford a cool $1,000 knife, check out Muamasi Fire Art. Joe Rogan talked about him briefly on a podcast and he was a judges pick contender who won an episode on Forged in Fire. Went to HS with him and he is a super great guy. https://instagram.com/maumasifirearts?igshid=11lolgktyp3ns

On a scale of 1-10, how irritated and/or pissed should I be that one of the people I share my Netflix account with (brother/sister-in-law, mother/father-in-law) upgraded my Netflix account to the Ultra HD package without asking me? You have to do it from a logged in computer and not the app.
Bear in mind that I've never once asked any of them to help pay for it, but none of them have ever offered, either. It's only a $4/month difference, but to not even ask or gives a heads up?- Show previous comments 9 more

A pilot program is going to test paying Taco Bell managers $100k salaries in an effort to reduce turnover... forcing millions of Americans to question their life choices.

@Xmas32 it also helps that their product isn't a$$. Just sayin.
I mean if employee retention is what you want and it benefits the bottom line to pay them 2-3 times what you've been doing, fine. But it still isn't going to do much for a Taco Bell type place as far as increasing customers and sales. It might have the effect of lowering their costs tho.
-
@JJ Husker I agree that Taco Bell's pilot program is probably doomed to fail. Too many things working against it.

Looking for feedback! I'm planning to apply for an airline credit card/traveler's credit card and I'm currently down to two options - I'm either going to get a general one with Chase Sapphire Preferred Rewards or an airline specific one with Delta Skymiles. But, I'd love to get thoughts/opinions from anyone who travels a lot. Who do you use? Pros/cons? Would you go with a different rewards program now if you could? Thanks!

I use a Chase Sapphire Preferred and its great. Although if you are considering a Chase Sapphire Preferred, get the Chase Sapphire Reserve instead. It's annual fee is $350 extra per year, but you get $300 each year in travel vouchers, more cash back per expenditures, and free global entry.
Both cards provide free rental car insurance and insurance for electronic purchases.
