  1. Kind of funny how things develop. Two months ago people were sure that Chins was terrible and McCaffrey needed to be our starting QB. Weird how things you think you know can turn out to be totally wrong.

  2. So much negative talk about Jurgens. I understand and see first hand how bad the snaps are and how many times it has cost us negative plays, including the timing issues in the passing game. I also know how hard it is to play center (technique alone), especially if you are going to run 99.9% from the gun. This is not a natural feat. Throw in the more demanding task of understanding defensive fronts and having to learn all the line calls at the D1 level. Jurgens is a FREAK athlete. I am as frustrated as the rest of you, but I refuse to banish him and constantly harp. For anyone who hasn't experience "turf toe", which may be the most difficult injury to play through, it limits a ton of movement. Considering a Center has a lot of weight transfer at the snap, yes it can play a part. No excuses, but a little insight. As a coach, I am personally waiting to see what the beginning of next season holds. If he struggles, then I am all on board with the "Jurgens must go" side, but I just have a gut feeling that many will be eating their words when he is playing Center in the NFL.

  3. I’ll summarize the past two years’ philosophy for you: 1. Bubble screen 2. Wandale designated touch 3. QB scramble for first down *4. Bad snap and/or penalty 5. RB run into defender for three yards 6. Another Wandale touch 7. Throw out of bounds on third and long 8. Punt *#4 was always a wildcard and could appear at any point in the order. Quite the suspense!

  4. If nothing else, I gotta give Dismuke some respect for being the only one of the Calabasas guys who stuck with us. California kid seems to enjoying Nebraska, tossing #thegoodlife on there.

  5. In fairness to Offensive Identity, we run an offense very similar to those employed by the most successful teams in football. We just don't run it very well.

  6. After they made the snapping adjustment, he played and snapped relatively well the rest of the season. Not sure you can keep harping about it if they've corrected it already.

  8. I've been around for some time. Seen Carter, Reagan, H W Bush, Clinton, Dubya, Obama, and now Trump. Only one of them has started a freaking riot with words that have come out of his piehole. That's 40 years of NO riots or insurrections.

  9. Returning experience is absolutely the most solid predictor of future defensive success. We could legit field a top 25/30-ish defense next year pretty easily.

  10. There's another element to this that I think has gone unnoticed the last two years. If we have three legit receivers on the field, we don't have to rotate as many packages and the offense can finally go fast. They were able to do this to a certain extent at the end of year one when we had Morgan, Spielman, and Ozigbo on the field at the same time. Granted the play was sloppy, and the culture was weak because of how poorly they were coached under Riley, but at least they had talent on the field. They could run the entire offense out of that set without having to substitute packages in and out. In my opinion, that was our biggest problem the last two years on offense. We were consistently rotating players into packages which led to Wandale playing a ton of RB and replacing him in the slot with lesser talented receivers. If we can get Allen & Fidone on the field with a consistent stable of receivers for multiple plays in a row, we can start to stress defenses with the speed of the offense and actually create matchups that this offense requires to move the ball. This is obviously a false equivalent, but the other night on Davante Smith's last TD in the first half, he was lined up against Tuf Borland and they scored on a quick strike down the middle. They were able to do that because they had four legit threats at receiver and only one "free" safety. If it wasn't Smith, it was going to someone else. That's what I think the lack of talent at WR and RB has prevented the last two years. We can't get a matchup anywhere and the defense ques on our only good receiver. I might be alone in thinking this, but I really think the offense will look more like it did in year one simply because there's going to be more talent on the field which enables Frost & Co. to run their offense they way it was intended. I'm probably wrong, and the past few years have cemented my doubt, but there's at least a glimmer of optimism with some of these transfer portal opportunites.

  12. Prediction: there won't be much actual change in philosophy, this is more about getting some things in place Frost has wanted all along, but has had trouble recruiting/developing/holding onto.

  14. Perhaps I'm buying to much into the recent transfer additions, but I think the 2021 team will have the most overall talent that Frost has had. I know Toure hasn't played a down yet, but when was the last time we had a WR on our roster who was a legit draft pick after his Junior season? Stanley Morgan was legit, don't get me wrong, but I don't think he had the draft prospects Toure does. I think Betts will see a big jump after getting his feet wet this year and continued learning of the playbook. Martin will be a solid possession receiver. The tight-end spot and depth is the best its been for quite some time as Allen has proven to be an effective weapon and adding Fidone to the mix may take some time but he will be a mis-match at some point next year. RB is still somewhat of a question even with Stepp but the talent is there (just none with the game breaking ability of Mo Wash). The defense is also bringing back the most talent in 10 years and since 2009. I am not saying the defense will be on the same level or caliber (and still expect that 2009 to be better come seasons end) but this is the closest to that talent level we have had.

  15. Guess the Rivals guys are saying it's between us and Oregon. Not surprising, but it doesn't sound like Minnesota is very likely at this point.

  16. Based on which kids? People can debate Wan'Dale's rationale, but none of the others are surprises. B1G West champ Northwestern has 8 guys in the portal this year - in the past they would just suddenly not be on the roster, but now there are announcements and speculation. And for NW, it's not even guys buried on the depth chart - the RBs had been passed, but were still #2 and #3 for carries and yards among their RBs. McGowan was their #2 receiver. Leota led the team in sacks. Ruiz played in every game with a couple of starts. It's not just here. Wan'Dale (and JD) are the only recent ones I would consider concerning, and I understand Wan'Dale's reasons. You can argue the Florida guys too, but we lost most of them when Covid hit and Gray had to go back home.

  18. What are we wanting Frost to do? He, like Chip prefers to run the ball. 2015 Oregon (Frost OC, Lubick WR) - ran the ball 60% of the time and was 6th in the country in rush offense. Frost and Lubick grew up in Chip's system. Bubble Screens, PA Pass, Inside Zone, Outside Zone, Zone Read, Power. It's the system they run. I don't really get what people are advocating for, I find it highly unlikely they scrap the system they've both ran their entire careers.

  19. I’m still wondering why Chins DBs are so far back on 3rd down and why the blitz package usually sucks. I also wonder why they don’t wrap up and tackle.

  20. Yeah, "identity" is another cop-out term that people like to throw about when they don't like the overall results. We were maybe a little more sporadic this year because of all the injuries at RB. But I think it's pretty obvious what we like to do. What would people say Clemson's identity is? Ohio State's? Oklahoma's? I'm guess it would be pretty vague to encompass all that they do. But they are good so there's not as much to complain about.

  21. You can call it coaching or whatever you want, but we played well enough to beat NW and Iowa this year. Yes, it all comes back to coaching, but there were plenty of non-coach mistakes that swung those games. I think it's stretching quite a bit to say he hasn't made it through a game without a bad snap. I am also frustrated they popped back up early in the year, but they were not really present later in the year. And if we're saying he has 3 years of bad snaps, you're counting his year as an injured freshman TE. Can't say I care a lot about what his snaps were like then.

  32. Think of how dangerous and stupid this point of view is. This opens the door for anyone to try it, because there are no real repercussions for trying. Some other people can go and die for you but you're safe as long as you didn't personally, physically hurt someone. What is this guy's view on the leaders of drug gangs? They get to do whatever they want as long as they aren't doing the actual shooting and dealing? It's s#!t logic. What about people who hire hitmen?

  37. With all the guys returning on defense, that is a very positive sign that these players believe in the defensive staff AND philosophy which is amazing news. I think the defense could be the best we have seen since the Pelini days (not 2009 good but potentially 2010 or 2011 good. Now, with key departures on offense, and the decision by some seniors to not return, this is a sign that there need to be some pretty dramatic changes on that side of the ball. If players felt positive about where the offense was headed, they would likely be making similar decisions to return. I really hope Frost and Lubick take a hard look at what's not working and are willing to completely scrap those portions of the playbook. The offense needs an identity to build around, and I have yet to see what that identify might be in the Frost system.

  41. That's been the most frustrating thing, for everyone including Frost. You call a safe zone read first play of the game, you don't plan on your QB deciding 3 seconds too late and 2 yards downfield to swing it out to the bubble option. Our OL plays well for a long stretch, then has a bizarre rash of false starts and holds. A QB decides the right idea on a play with a coverage he didn't expect is to chuck it up to a TE, without noticing the 2 defenders there or really throwing a jump ball. Replaced by a QB who decides he can throw a football through a lineman's head and past good coverage. I know the argument that it all has to be coached up, but it's like playing whack-a-mole with the variety of errors. Based on the re-watches, I have no concerns with the scheme. It will come down to whether experienced guys stop making these mistakes, or if there is in fact something in the coaching style that lends itself to these mistakes - I don't believe that, so I'm optimistic overall.
