  2. If all Americans don't cringe and feel uneasy when the President of the United States uses the term "Opposition Party" to describe the Democratic party and the press, we are lost.

  6. I read the last article. Good read. Honestly, it's all stuff that I'm not surprised is the case after as bad of economic disaster as that was. I also don't see much there that honestly the government can fix. It just takes time to work it's way through. Example. I've stated on here before that our company almost went bankrupt during the time between 2007 and 2011. Our sales were cut by 50%. We waited as long as we could before we had to cut jobs and that exacerbated the losses. Our bank went out of business leaving us without funding and (since we were losing money) no bank wanted us. If it weren't for one hell of a lot of really tough decisions, hard work and some major luck...we wouldn't be here. Our sales and workforce still aren't where they were in 2006. The bottom line of the company has been healthy since 2012. But, we are still paying down large amounts of debt that were built up while losing money. All of this has caused everyone associated with the company from owners to lower end employees to go through some years with cut wages or no raises. I know my personal savings isn't where it would be if those years hadn't happened. All this is evidence of how vitally important the economy is and how making bad decisions can destroy financial security for so many. FYI....this is a major reason why I am scared to death of what Trump is doing with our trade partners and agreements. He's flying by the seat of his pants and has no clue what he's doing.

  8. Quote: "If not for me, we would be in a war with North Korea" Let's break this down: 1. Trump ups the rhetoric wt NK & provokes a response ... check 2. Trump escalates the rhetoric and calls NK leader childish names ... check 3. Fat Boy, Trump's name of endearment for NK leader, responds in kind ... check 4. Trump moves ships and airplanes into the region with the intent to intimidate said Fat Boy .. check 5. Trump threatens nuclear war in response to Fat Boy's missile testing and his insults of Trump... check 6. Orange Face and Fat Boy hold a sham peace conference which accomplished little but a photo opp for each .. check 7. Fat Boy, gaining international prestige by being on the same stage as a USA President, is emboldened to restart nuke work ..check 8. Trump falsely boasts & blames fake news and dem party while closing his eyes on current realities in order to boost his weak ego .. check 9. America less safe living under Trump's disillusion thinking and grandiose, braggadocios mind set. His cult like followers won't protect us from Trump...check 10 It seems to me that you cannot take credit (boasting) for saving America from a war if you were the one in position to provoke NK into starting a war or threatening to do so yourself.

  9. You are entitled to your opinion - not everyone has the biological instinct to propagate the species, and the contributions of many offspring can be argued. Perhaps I misunderstood the intent of your post? I thought you wanted to better understand why people own dogs and if the investment was worthwhile. In retrospect it seems you really didn't want insight, but rather an opportunity to find folks that felt the same way and to debate and belittle those who feel differently. My point is that I dont' call people odd because they hover over every bowel movement and accomplishment of their children. To each their own. If we're talking history, the way parents raise children today obsessive. It used to be that parents had children to help farm, to take care of siblings, to carry on the family name and business. Somewhere along the way they've turned into worry wart helicopter parents that want to be friends with their kids, and give them an easier life. I used to get kicked out of the house every summer day by 8 am and be told to ride your bike, play do whatever - see you when the street lights come on. Today's kid is scheduled for multiple camps, is being driven to and from and has their every minute managed by mom or dad. I had to be out of bed by 8am even on weekends and summers, now I have neighbors that ask me not to trim my hedges until after 9 am because their teenage son is sleeping. Today parents have trackers on their kid's phones and have check in texts every hour. They arrange for "play dates" and accompany the children to make sure all is ok. I have a colleague that was complaining that his daughter was "bored" already after being out of college for 2 weeks and when I asked if she was working he said, "well she did for a week early on and earned some money". Things evolve. You have your interests and things you choose to invest in that I do not. Your last sentence in the OP, while perhaps intending to stir up discussion is pretty condescending.

  15. I'll just jump into the fray here, but I think free higher education at public universities for anyone who wants it should be something we strive for. I know the line about how some are immature and won't try hard thing, but what is wrong with trying to over educate the population? Clearly there are too many idiots around these days with flat earthers and anti-vaxers. A jobs guarantee while impractical is a thoughtful idea. It's not like you can just move out west and stake out a new claim to land these days.

  18. 1968 - if you didn't live through it, you don't know it. I was only 12-13 then but I was well aware of it big time - and I lived on a farm outside a safe small SD town. TET offensive by Viet Con in Vietnam, King and Kennedy assassinations, riots, racial tensions, looting, burnt cities, LBJ decides against a 2nd term & the disastrous, riot filled Chicago Dem convention and Nixon's election. It was the year hell broke through the crust and unleashed its fury on the USA. 2018 is a cake walk in comparison.

  20. Setting aside our biological instinct to propagate the species, children can grow into productive members of society and bring more value into our families and into our communities than simple companionship. Plus, our children give us a reason to want to leave the world a better place (hopefully) and pass on what we have learned. People who have children just for companionship have serious problems! There are some good posts in this thread that I very much appreciate, but to me the way some people obsess over their pets still seems odd. Historically, early man learned to domesticate animals so they can be kept for food, hunting, or work. Somewhere along the way, someone decided to turn them into friends as well. Later on, people started to refer to them as "fur babies."

  21. Unfortunately the best evidence that George Lucas is not - and never was - a good storyteller is not available on the internet right now. It's from a 2014 documentary about the making of the first film. I watched it with my wife a year or so ago, and it was fascinating. Apparently Lucas and Steven Spielberg were part of a group of directors who would show each other their work and critique each other. When Lucas showed them Star Wars, they hated it. The scenes were not in the order we see today, there were tons of extra scenes that had to be deleted, the scenes had to be reordered... it was terrible. If Lucas doesn't show that preview to his buddies and they don't fix it for him, that movie is another Flash Gordon. Much of the rest of the mythos surrounding Star Wars is from the spark it made to our imaginations. It was not a great movie. It was a great idea for a movie, and it caught our imagination in a big way, but some of that movie's success happened in spite of Lucas.

  24. The problems with 401k only retirement planning are many imo. Between repressed wages , slashed/no overtime, high cost of living , huge medical expenses etc millions of people struggle to make ends meet at all, let alone save for retirement . Company pensions were a tool to attract and keep good workers and a reward for time served . With full social security at 62 and company pension workers could retire at a reasonable age and enjoy what’s left of their lives . With SS age requirements at 70, and company pensions gone millions of people in the wealthiest country on earth will have to work until they are dead , while companies take the lions share of the fruits of their labor . It’s just wrong .

  26. Feel free to add first music you ever received. The first cassette tapes I bought were Michael Jackson - Dangerous and Counting Crows - August and Everything After. At the time Best Buy had maybe 20 cassette tapes in the store, and I didn't know about CD players yet. The first CD I bought was Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily (1995). The first music ever given to me (around 1992) was a mix tape one of my brothers made which had Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and They Might Be Giants mixed together at random. It was awesome.

  34. You're cobbling together unconnected things and trying to form a coherent whole. And you're leaving out one glaring part - several of these movies aren't very good. We're all on board with the prequels being iffy, and there were no allegations that the 'meh' reception they received was due to any racism or misogyny. Some people are racists, or misogynists, or both. But those people are a minority, both in society and in people who don't like these movies.

  35. It has nothing to do with red tinted glasses or anything. He went to Wisconsin. Then he stopped in at UNL again. He didn't go anywhere else after that for any big recruiting weekends and such. So I just read it as he's done making his visits and has seen what he needs to in order to make a decision.

  37. Well my arm is better thx to pills, have to wear a sling until it gets operated on. I just take it slow when cleaning the house and cooking etc. I saw this and it made me smile and thought it might brighten up someone’s day in here. Laughter is really the best medicine. At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside And asked, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?" "Yes, coach", replied the little boy. " Do you understand that what matters is whether we win or lose together as a team?" The little boy nodded in the affirmative. "So," the coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse the umpire, or call him an asshole. Do you understand all that?" Again, the little boy nodded in the affirmative. The coach continued, "And when I take you out of the game so that another boy gets a chance to play, it's not a dumb-ass decision or that the coach is a s#!thead is it?" "No, coach." "Good", said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother.”
