  2. What have the Democrats done about either issue? Pointing fingers and assigning blame is why nothing ever gets done.

  3. Replying to the person in this article... I talked a bit about this in a post I made yesterday, but we do need some guns. Hunters, especially in rural areas, provide a necessary service in keeping the animal populations down. We cannot have deer breeding rampantly and wandering onto highways getting plowed into by cars, or getting into fields and destroying crops. So while I advocate better regulation of guns, I don't advocate elimination of guns entirely. They're a tool we need.

  4. Find this perspective a bit short sided. If Riley had been hired at the time of Callahan, you'd be saying Riley is who destroyed our traditions. That is focusing the argument essentially on timing. If we focus entirely on the field, Riley is without question the worst (as you stated). I can't believe I'm defending Callahan but all he did was bring the system he believed in at the instruction of Pederson. You could also argue Callahan's system worked. Now if you want to argue who is the worse AD, timing must be apart of it and I personally would put Pederson over Eichorst.

  5. I don't think that interpretation is a bunch of phooey. The constitution's well-regulated militia is directly related to the Articles of Federation 's definition of the same, and it (the AOF) has a longer and more descriptive version. basically it refers to State Militias (forerunners to the National Guard). In the early days there were many issues with training, supplies, and deserters, because it was a part-time civilian force. Scalia's interpretation sounds more accurate to the original intent to me. The question I have is the original intent of the second part. It may have referred to militias too, but it sure doesn't read that way. I wish the framers had added a sentence or two to clarify it all. i think there is folly in thinking the constitution is perfect and not needing revisions.

  6. I'd prefer if you looked that up. I'm heading to bed now. It took me all of 2 minutes to find this, but haven't read the whole thing yet. What you're saying might be true for many topics but not this one. The reason nothing gets done is because the GOP and NRA don't want it to get done. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-many-gun-control-proposals-have-been-offered-since-2011/

  7. I know it's complicated, but if America is about to become a country that builds walls instead of bridges -- literally -- and defunds our schools of everything except armed guards, we are not a great nation. Not even close.

  8. The difference is Ike was a driving force behind creating the interstate system. And he didn't brag about it. Al Gore lied about creating the internet.

  9. Have you read the topic? Doesn't seem like it, since no one is doing what Ric is claiming. Most of the discussion has been an agreement that something should be done, and then discussing what it should be. It's been a really reasonable discussion, actually, from people who've never owned a gun to those who own several, those who think it's a mental health problem, a gun problem, and both. It's been a good discussion, especially given the topic, so it's pretty obnoxious when people randomly come in throwing out generalities that don't apply at all to what people have been posting.

  10. Promote pregnancy prevention? I think we're all aware of how it happens. I have zero doubts, so I agree with you, that the GOP pretends to care about abortions for the political vote it comes with. Just as I think the Democrats have done the same with minorities for decades. Personally, aside from a few exceptions, I find abortion selfish, irresponsible, ironic, and disgusting.... And I'm not looking for any votes. And regarding "cares about the unborn more than living people".... There's a level of responsibility that the "living person" has for one's positioning in the world once they reach adulthood. Many people, myself included, find it a lot easier to sympathize with the innocent (unborn), than those who have the wherewithal to help themselves (adults).

  11. If we can get something accomplished moving toward saving our kids in the classroom, I wonder if Democrats would be willing to get on board with saving the 100's of thousands of kid that are unnecessarily aborted every year before having the chance to experience life outside the womb? Complete, serious thought.... Not trying to "troll".

  13. ^That article is great reading, btw. This is where my conviction about doing away with the 2A comes from. Those amendments in the BoR should be fiercely defended and equal protection via the 14th amendment should apply. Where state or local laws make incursions on these protections, the Supreme Court should step in. The problem is the inclusion -- at least by our relatively modern interpretation -- of "owning guns" among those things that should be exalted. -- @Redux, it's plain that you have a broad spectrum aversion to political debate. I wonder where you've confused this stance as being the one that cares "more" about the major issues. If you care, participate. If you not only don't care but consider the debate pointless, then at least pair that up with an honest "I don't care about any political issue" posture.

  14. I think we lost a little in terms of set plays and offensive rhythm when Craig Smith took a head coaching job as a result of our success in 2014. Hopefully we can keep improving on those aspects. If we keep making little bits of progress here and there and keep bringing in talent like we have right now we could be pretty dangerous.

  16. So last night Twitter made a mass 'block" of Russian bot accounts and others who show evidence of mechanical retweeting etc. It's pretty interesting to see folks losing their mind because the people they followed disappeared or their number of followers decreased by 100. Of course it's "censorship" by the leftists.

  17. They're not. The GOP brings up mental health so they don't have to do anything about access to guns. They then do nothing about mental health.

  18. Enough with this "Dems don't have goals" drivel already (sorry -- but not sorry). Nobody with any interest in finding out can be blind to what the political fights of the day are, why they're happening, and who wants what. It's plain as day, too, that throwing rhetorical barbs all around is rewarding and self-satisfactory. Opposing Republicans and Trump without committing to action; there's a lot of that going around. And no, bitching about the Democrats ad nauseam isn't "action". And no, bitching ad nauseam about the Democrats isn't "action". It's not even clear that the leftists who do have any well-defined, articulated, coherent policy goals of their own, outside of patting themselves on the back for being pure enough to vaguely oppose "the Dems, too" wholesale. Stopping Trump requires organization. Activate the base. Turn out in special elections -- as we have, with considerable success so far. Turn out this November. Flip the House, take back the Senate. There's a long way to go from there, and divergent goals within the anti-Trump coalition, sure, but you don't fly before you can even crawl.

  20. Also, there's not an armed guard, armed teacher, or swift arriving policeman who wouldn't be at a disadvantage against a kid with an assault rifle and a deathwish. They are terrorists, and that's how terrorists work. They just don't have a cause beyond their narcissistic nihilism.

  21. It seems similar to me, after reading the following. For the record, I'm not very passionate about defending Al Gore, I just feel this quote has been misused and overused. I'm just pasting this from Wikipedia. A lot of it is new information to me. 24 Jun 1986: Albert Gore introduced S 2594 Supercomputer Network Study Act of 1986[4] As a Senator, Gore began to craft the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 (commonly referred to as "The Gore Bill"[5]) after hearing the 1988 report Toward a National Research Network[6] submitted to Congress by a group chaired by UCLA professor of computer science, Leonard Kleinrock, one of the central creators of the ARPANET (the ARPANET, first deployed by Kleinrock and others in 1969, is the predecessor of the Internet).[7] Indeed, Kleinrock would later credit both Gore and the Gore Bill as a critical moment in Internet history: A second development occurred around this time, namely, then-Senator Al Gore, a strong and knowledgeable proponent of the Internet, promoted legislation that resulted in President George H.W Bush signing the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991. This Act allocated $600 million for high performance computing and for the creation of the National Research and Education Network [13–14]. The NREN brought together industry, academia and government in a joint effort to accelerate the development and deployment of gigabit/sec networking.[8] The bill was passed on Dec. 9, 1991 and led to the National Information Infrastructure (NII)[9] which Gore referred to as the "information superhighway". President George H. W. Bush predicted that the bill would help "unlock the secrets of DNA," open up foreign markets to free trade, and a promise of cooperation between government, academia, and industry.[10] Prior to its passage, Gore discussed the basics of the bill in an article for the September 1991 issue of Scientific American entitled Scientific American presents the September 1991 Single Copy Issue: Communications, Computers, and Networks. His essay, "Infrastructure for the Global Village", commented on the lack of network access described above and argued: "Rather than holding back, the U.S. should lead by building the information infrastructure, essential if all Americans are to gain access to this transforming technology"[11] [...] "high speed networks must be built that tie together millions of computers, providing capabilities that we cannot even imagine."[12] Hooray Nebraska quarterbacks. GO BIG RED!

  22. What constitutes policy inaction is a matter of perspective. Why not allow teachers to carry guns? Why not hire unemployed veterans and arm them to guard schools? Why do you assume that any policy action necessarily has to require limitations on gun ownership?

  24. Compromise involves acknowledging that someone you disagree with has a valid point. I see an awful lot of people posting here who lack the intellectual maturity to do that. They would rather cast their political enemies as some combination of stupid, evil, and crazy than try to work toward an actual solution. I think a bill that raised the age limit for long guns to 21, established a system of background checks that actually works, prevented known crazy people from owning guns, etc. could gain serious traction.

  31. Couple of questions about this. Where is the evidence that this is true? If the gun violence problem is a mental health issue, where is the evidence that America has more mentally ill people than every other first-world country? If there's no proven link between mental health and gun violence, why would the Democrats need to do anything about mental health in order to fix the gun violence problem? Because doctors do not agree that the gun violence problem is a mental health issue: LINK And all Congress is doing is paying lip service to these two separate - but important - topics. They passed a toothless bill in 2016, but they still haven't implemented it into an effective law. Two years later. LINK

  33. Favorite sin has to be gluttony. I'm trying to live my life alcohol free now, (last time I drank was last New Year's Eve). Although I can eat, and--at times, even make a Hobbit say I eat too much. But when it comes to booze, I used to regularly drain a 750ml bottle of spiced rum in a night. I'd get off work on a Friday afternoon, make a stop at the liquor store, get what I need, and start drinking at about 6 pm. By 1 am or so, the entire bottle of rum would be gone.

  35. You can talk about the evil Republicans all you want, but that doesn't have any impact on what the Dems goals are or how they message them. I can simultaneously oppose Trump and the Republicans, turn out for elections, AND be dissatisfied with the Dem party. And that's not a "both sides" or "equal & opposite" position either.

  38. It's actually not, because it's creating a boom/bust economic cycle in the Gun and Ammunition industry. While the NRA continues to control the narrative right now, the more you see companies have to weather these storms, the more you're going to see them pull away from the NRA and embrace some of the more sane, reasonable alternative organizations. As for gun control, the thing I keep going back to is that the Amendment calls for a well-regulated militia. If these owners want to consider themselves militia for gun ownership, then that's fine. That means they need to be regulated, which would include: Testing and verification of competence of gun ownership (e.g. Gun Licenses) Insurance for Firearm ownership, including Liability and Theft insurance (make it requisite, or one is fined/goes to jail if an incident occurs without) Semi-automatic rifles of all types cannot be stored in the home. Instead, make gun clubs a requirement for semi-auto rifle ownership. I mean, FFS, you shouldn't be hunting with them if you're any kind of sportsman, and there's no reason to keep them at home. You're primary use for these weapons is for fun at the range, which is where they should be stored and the weapons can be checked in/out on a 12 hour basis (longer is available for dealers or for shooting competitors).

  40. .500 is not acceptable That absolutely does not mean we should be pissed and angry if we go 6-6, nor does it mean Frost sucks etc. I can't believe it only took 3 years of Riley's career .500 mind set to not only lower our teams determination, but apparantely lower our fanbases expectations THAT much. When Bo was brough in the expectations were pretty high and he even took a losing team and won 9 with a brutal schedule. Riley's expectations were to come in and keep the 9 win machine moving. After his disaster 4-8 year, we will be happy with 6-6? That's unbelievable to me. I'll be disappointed as hell if we finish .500 and I'm bettimg coach will be way more upset about it than any of us.

  42. Callahan was slightly better. Dropped that 73-point bomb on KSU toward the end of '07, and put up 51 on CU. Even at the end of a bad season, they were making it work. Horrible defense, but Ganz and Co. were lighting it up, and there was still pride to play for. Last season, everything died after the loss to NIU. They looked like a bunch of kids that just wanted to get it over with, and none of us have ever seen that kind of attitude and disinterested coaching wearing Scarlet and Cream. Just unacceptable. Hope Frost can turn things around quickly. He certainly has on the recruiting trail.
