I literally spent the last part explaining this.

Most of what Riley had to work with were recruited by Pelini and had some development under Pelini. Really only Riley's third year would that have been more guys that he recruited and that had "developed" under him for three years. That year we went 4-8 and had one of the worst defenses we've ever had. I'm not saying development doesn't play a part of it. It absolutely does. But it's also hard to quantify. Here's a look at our three leading rushers and receivers over the last six years and who they were recruited by: 2015: Rushing - Pelini, Pelini, Pelini Receiveing - Pelini, Pelini, Pelini 2016: Rushing - Pelini, Pelini, Riley Receiving - Pelini, Pelini, Pelini 2017: Rushing - Riley, Pelini, Riley Receiving - Pelini, Riley, Pelini 2018: Rushing - Riley, Frost, Frost Receiving - Pelini, Riley, Frost 2019: Rushing - Frost, Frost, Frost Receiving - Riley, Frost, Frost 2020: Rushing - Frost, Frost, Frost Receiving - Frost, Riley Frost By Riley's third year, he could only contribute three of the six to his own recruiting. Frost contributed three of his own in the first year and five out of six in the other two. Pelini was still contributing more receiving in Frost's first year than Riley was. Yeah, Riley had more wins in his first three years than Frost did. But to try to pass that off acting like they were starting on equal footing is laughable.

No, with Pelini's guys. Riley left crap to work with on offense, as I've already outlined several times but you seem to ignore.

It was the elimination of Prop 48. It was an offense whose time had passed. It was the slow erosion of a championship attitude in the locker room. It was the fact that Solich wasn't half the coach Osborne was. It was an AD that meddled without understanding. It was a thousand little things that led to the demise of Nebraska football. But that wouldn't make a compelling narrative so let's pin it on this game for this content I have to produce every week.

I would like to see you point to one of the "facts" that I've posted that isn't true. Riley had Pelini's recruits to work with. Frost has had Riley's to work with. Chicken salad and such. You can be tired of it all you want. That doesn't mean it's not true. I mentioned in earlier posts that Frost bears some blame in the recruiting department also. But I guess you keep ignoring the parts you don't want to read.

Chins was much more prepared than Scott when they came to Nebraska. He remembers the style of play and size difference. It's no surprise that the Defense is on the verge of a breakout. If they do, get the checkbook out. He will be a hot commodity D coordinator because he is also an elite recruiter.

The first bad decision when letting him go was who they hired as the AD. The second bad decision when letting him go was the timing. He either should have been let go a year earlier, or given at least a year once he replaced his staff. But, he replaced his staff when the decision was already made and just about anything they did in that first year of the staff, didn't matter.

Right. People are mad at Frost for "missing" on recruits who were redshirt freshman and sophomores last year who didn't have a spring. It's essentially being mad that a bare cupboard didn't get immediately replenished, which is nothing but impatience and a lack of understanding of how good college football programs work. Iowa and Wisconsin are good because when they have a contributor graduate or go pro, they've got another three-star redshirt junior at his position they've been cooking for four years ready to step in and play. That wasn't happening under Riley in the first place, and then everyone from one class transferred when Frost got the job. It's not really going to be an excuse going forward, but a lot of our problems are affected by not having any depth and that's not really on the new coach.

Another thing to think about here is that, when a recruit arrives on campus he's probably not going to contribute for a couple or three years regardless of how talented he is. It's rare that a true frosh gets significant playing time. (With some notable exceptions. Like Wan'dale.) The lag in contributing means that whoever did the recruiting 2 to 3 years before largely determines the talent level on the field. Riley pulled in some good recruits. But most of his best recruits left when he did. The cupboard was pretty bare for Frost's first couple of years. But that excuse has pretty much expired now that we're headed into Frost year 4.

The one and only common denominator the last 24yrs - Tom Osborne. So many wrong decisions. Picked the wrong coach with zero HC experience the first time, Picked the wrong coach with zero HC experience the second time that no AD in America would now touch. Save Pelini's job in 2013 when he should have been fired, at which time Pelini decides to stop recruiting for his last 2.5 yrs resulting in big damage to program. Picked a HC with no coaching experience the 3rd time who has lost 5-6 games he should not have. TBD Provided no support and caused fractures in the AD department when an outsider was hired. Acted like a child when didnt get his way (publicly giving up his skybox, etc..) The program would have faired much better if T.O had retired, moved away and gone fishing in Florida in 1997. Instead he and his handpicked coaches have been running the show for 17 of the last 24 years and we have nothing to show for it. Legendary coach, absolutely horrible administrator.

Yes, and waiters at many places make more than the minimum wage. Believe me, I would love for the US to go to more of what is done in Europe where tipping isn't expected and most of the time not done. The waiter is paid more from the restaurant and the food is more expensive. But, it all equals out and you see lots of times older people being waiters because of it.

Ask around and see if they would rather work tips and low salary or a regular paying salary and not tips.

I have hired lots of people for $20+/hr jobs when they were making much less. There are lots of people in those jobs that gain basic skills where we can finish the training here. My company isn't unique in that. There are LOTS of jobs out there that do on the job training. I just hired two people for the office in the last 6 months that fall into this. One had basic computer skills but had never really worked in Excel. Fine....we will teach her Excel. Meanwhile, I can't think of a time where I hired someone for $20 per hour plus and in the interview they said, "well, I haven't been working for 6 months. But, during that time, I learned how to work in Excel". This really isn't that hard of a concept.

Given some of the logic here, can we blame the Riley years all on Pelini? Asking for a friend.

The CU debacle didn't start the dismantling of Huskers dynasty. It just exposed us for the paper tigers we were that year. We ranked in the top 5 all season. But we were not a top 5 team. We beat a mediocre K-state team in Lincoln by 10 the week before CU. I think that's about how good we were. I have no idea how we managed to be #2 Oklahoma earlier in the season. :shrug:

Yes, that absolutely was the catalyst for the start of our demise. As much as it pains me to admit that, being the Colorado residing Buff hater that I am. Obviously steps were taken after the debacle in Boulder that further cemented the fall but that one event is what precipitated it. Frank and Bohl let the curtain be pulled back in that travesty of a game. It is why Solich had to go and that led to so many bad decisions that we are all aware of.

HH looked ok but nothing to get really excited about to me. The measurables are there so I guess we will see. Smoothers didn't look great throwing but he looked fast. I'm guessing we see him burn some defenses with his legs before his time here is over. It's unfortunate but he really reminded me of Luke 2.0. I do agree with some posts above- spring games only tell us so much. AM - clear #1

I have avoided this game for many years as a beat down that nobody should revisit. I finally got recommended it one too many times and checked it out out of morbid curiosity. Eric Crouch came out too amped/tight and had a quick fumble and missed some easy throws that put us down 21-0 pretty quick. After we pull it together and fix some of the over aggressive defensive calls with all the linebackers at the LOS, we generally shut down Colorado's run game. By the end of the 3rd quarter we fought back into the game and are down by 12 with the momentum, before we had another lapse in defensive assignments (you can pull linemen on aggressive fits? who knew?). Once we had another leak when playing from behind it was over, but the game crushing, we didn't deserve to be on the field, annihilation that I had once remembered was gone. All I saw was a bad start from what was a good player and a defense that took too long to adjust to keep them in it. 28-3 in the first quarter is something that all Nebraska teams have never been able to overcome. If they had to do it again, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2010 Washington/Nebraska scenario playing out between the two teams.

Frank was an OK HC, a great position coach, not so good OC and a weak CEO> He should have been kept around after the 2003 season to give the new staff a chance to mature. Then gracefully move him into an admin role once NU found a good replacement. Solich to Bo to Frost would have been a much healthier path than Solich- Callahan- riley- Frost

I think that's the biggest issue back then. I love TO as much as anyone. But, he sealed Solich's fate when he forced him to keep the old staff. They had lived off of TO being able to draw in the best talent for years. Once TO was gone, they didn't understand how to recruit without him.

It's part of a series of articles they're doing on huge upsets from the 2001 season. It's also a question they specifically asked the players & coaches involved in the game.

So don’t take a $12 an hour job, get the $20+ an hour job. Develop a skill set and be more employable

Yeah...that bamboo residue is so important to look for without securing the ballots......even after the ballots have been counted multiple times. I'm fine with recounts or whatever. But, if you think this is anywhere close to valid audit, you're doing nothing but fawning over party politics.

I think both have the ability to do great things this year. And, in a perfect world, both would do it. The highlights of Toure posted above are great. It's going to be very interesting to see how he does against actual D1 DBs. He can obviously out run FCS talent. Watching his highlights made me think of a faster Westerkamp.

Yep, Riley is long gone. All of the Huskers successes and failures are all on Coach Frost.

I have never heard of Torres until today, but if he's not starting by the time we play Buffalo, I'm going to be outraged.
