I think we fixate on the mass shootings because they are random and create a fear that we could be a victim. Gang violence and other shootings don't necessarily create that fear because we can put those victims in a neat little category that doesn't include "us". For example: they were a gang-banger, the guy was constantly cheating on his wife, etc. Sadly, not everyone that dies in the other shootings are always gang members and drug dealers, or jilted lovers.
