He didn't misspeak. He explicitly denied any 2015 incident having happened. This is PR Lying 101. That press release should be used in classes that teaches people to make press releases to deny wrongdoing and obfuscate/distract/engage in damage control. Best case he's a liar. Medium case, he did know about the incident, and reported it, while continuing to employ a coach that he knew had a history of several abuse allegations. Worst case, all of that is true plus he didn't report it. He might keep his job, but he's lost all credibility.

He just lied about lying. He wasnt caught off guard at B1G media days. He was a c$%ky SOB that tried to put Brett McMurphy in his place not thinking Brett would be able to get to the bottom of it. This looks like Urban trying to negotiate a buyout in my opinion. Hes saying it wasnt me it was someone higher up the chain that let this happen. I did my job etc. He would have been better off in the public eye by keeping his mouth shut for now.

It was only after McMurphy's first report in July did they actually fire Smith. They had issued a statement before that stating something like "We will not discuss this internal peronal matter", but kept him employed. You ask if he should fire Zach Smith for one alleged incident, maybe not. But there is a long history here leading up to that incident. For a man that tells anyone who will listen how much integrity he has, I can't understand why he didn't fire Smith sooner if he actually had some integrity like he claims. Or why he even hired him at Ohio State after what the guy did in Florida.

Brett McMurphy is absolutely savage in all of this. Not only does he give ESPN a big middle finger by continuing to get paid by them, while reporting on his own and breaking the biggest story of cfb (this year? so far? idk) on Facebook, but he's also completely RKOing Zach Smith and everyone involved. Zach claims he never abused his wife? Brett posts receipts of Zach acknowledging that he abused his wife.

I would love to see Ohio State's defense not execute against Frost's offense.

As a corp credit mgr for a manufacturing company I occasionally get these updates on the state of the economy based the perspectives of credit mgmt. A couple of items of note in the report copied in part below: 1. The tax cut 'benefit' is slowly loosing its bunch. 2. The economy growth from the last quarter was boosted by tariff fears. I expect slower growth next quarter. I'm not an economist, nor do I play one on TV, but tariff threats and increasing tariffs is no way to build an economy. I also believe we are beyond the point where tax cuts can add real long term value to the economy. It may have worked for JFK and Reagan during high tax eras but it didn't work for GWB (with all of his big spending) and it won't be sustainable under Trump. I wanted Scott Frost here as much as anyone, maybe even started a thread to that effect. I wanted him here when Riley was hired. I posted many times how fast schools with tradition turn it around when they make the correct hire. I once said, and still mean it, that I'd fire Scott Frost after year 3 if he hadn't made the kind of progress necessary to achieve our goals. That's the kind of pace these turnarounds take, and I fully realize that. I will admit, I'm still surprised at the place we are at, currently, hours away from the first fall camp of Scott Frost's tenure. I say that because of how exhaustive the change has been. Sites like this one, where we've all taken a new leaf. The fans, administration, faculty, support staff...everyone is working towards making this thing work. From what we know of the spring and the summer, the culture has changed almost overnight. Then there is the roster. Lots of new talent, and massive buy-in from returners. Players stepping up to take charge. This doesn't feel like Year 1. It's not Year 2, either, something in between. The expectations I normally would have for a Year 1 staff are much too low, though, and the players in today's press conference just reiterated that. If they had the kind of summer it sounds like they may have had, and we may have an answer for that by the time the next press conference hits, then hang onto your hats. I'm not prone to hyperbole, but I can't sleep at night. September can't get here soon enough.

Ohio State had to can Tressel for covering a few players taking improper benefits. But apparently some think Meyer can keep his job after covering for a guy on his staff beating his wife, and then lying about knowing about it (which he just admitted to)? I mean, step back for a second. Getting a few tattoos, versus years of domestic violence. I don't know about the rest of you, but I know which one I would consider the greater crime. What's really f#&%ed up is that Ohio State might have only fired Sweater Vest because they knew NCAA sanctions against him were coming (at one point the university president publicly said they weren't going to fire him), but Meyer could conceivably hold onto his job simply because this matter probably won't result in any sanctions from the NCAA.

Theory (RE: Meyer's statement): They won't be able to find documentation about him reporting the abuse, they'll blame the Title IX people who were fired. Then this'll be over.

Can't wait to hear him explain the pictures and texts she sent to other coaches wives who were on her side.

Good. I hope the NRA in its current form ceases to exist. It is the worst form of political lobby. Nobody likes special interest groups having too much sway, and that's exactly what the NRA has turned into.

I am surprised that we are a month away from games. I can remember sitting at Dinkers and scarffing down an amazing burger as the news came over the screen that Frost was going to be the new coach. Now here we are and I can't wait. It has been a long time since I have been more excited about the football than the tailgating/bars...but finally I am. Plus it is nice to finally have (almost) all posters realize what a joke of a hire Riley was.

So you're going to believe that Urban knows about the situation and never discusses with Shelley, his wife, who is considered the First Lady of Ohio State? The same lady who has texts conversations that could easily be shown to Urban? If that is the case, the absolute ignorance and neglect of a fellow football coach's wife getting beat to s#!t should get them all relieved of their duties.

I took a glance at OSU's Title IX policy, and their standard of proof for investigations of policy violations is the preponderance of the evidence. In other words, they would only have to find that it is more likely than not (a 51% probability of guilt, if that makes sense) that a policy was violated in order to take action. The proof does not have to be any more convincing than that. Unless the text messages are faked, it is simply implausible that Urban didn't know about all this stuff. There is no way to prove that he didn't know. Therefore, he failed in his duty to report, in violation of both the University's policy and his specific contract. Maybe if OSU wasn't already knee-deep in Title IX problems prior to this would the be able to wiggle out of it, but I don't see that happening. 1. They've already set their own precedent when they fired Tressel for being dishonest about lesser offenses. 2. They are already under the microscope for the issue with the wrestling team, the dead doctor, and the wackadoo Congressman. 3. OSU was already embarrassed by their marching band scandal about 4 years ago 4. They fired their whole Title IX office just last month for mishandling cases 5. Other college sports scandals involving sexual misconduct are still fresh in the publics' minds, not to mention the #metoo movement. This was the last thing OSU needed. Urban's gotta be gone.

Figured this was the best place to post this, but if you havent watched it yet(or didnt notice) you can see Honas in the newest Last Chance U when they play Butler CC. You only get to see a few plays and they arent focusing on him, but he makes a huge impact in that game.

I'm confident Frost will have a long and successful career here. There's a part of me that is anxious about it, though, because if he's not as successful as we all think then we're basically Minnesota. Sort of a true litmus test for the program.

I'm in the same position I believe many of the coaches, players and media members are in: offseason hype is great but it really doesn't mean anything when you get punched in the face by Ohio State's defensive line halfway through the season. How do you respond then versus what you're saying in August? I will admit two things, though: first, I'm more confident in Frost than I've been any coach in the last 20 years (outside of the early Solich years). Second, I think this year's offseason talk felt like it had far more substance and honesty than it ever has in the last 15-20 years. I feel like I'll be able to buy into almost any result this year because I'll know most of the staff and players exhausted every ounce of their being to achieve their goals.

I cant speak for anyone else but if he did what he was suppose to do I believe he should stay as well. Everything that continues to come out however tells me he covered s#!t up. The longer this goes the more skeletons will be shown to the public dating back over the last decade. It's going to get worse not better.

I think this was the biggest thing that frustrated most people. It's not the style of football we saw that we disliked so much (west coast, spread, pro, whatever), but that lack of discipline and lack of mental and physical toughness. We were so used to just lining up to people and beating them up, dominating them. Sure, we didn't win every game, but it always felt like we could (talking about Osborne years here). I think that's what we are so excited about. Finally having a coach that has everyone, and I do mean everyone, on the same page and it seems like they have fully bought in. We're seeing someone finally practice what the preach, rather than giving us fans empty coach-speak. We've got a coach that is giving us these things that we've been longing to see, but also isn't just trying to imitate Coach Orsborne. Coach SF is being himself, running his own program, but doing it right. As Scratchtown said, I don't care what the win total is next year, I just want to see our guys going out and putting foot to a$$ this season and getting things figured out.

Though I truly think NU will win 9 games. No more tails between the legs and “oh no we suck again” crap 16 years of crappy NU football. Ready for it to change.

This entire thing has had a narrative framed from the start assuming Meyer needs fired. We've skipped the process entirely. Let it play out, get all the facts on the table and then take appropriate action. We as societies invented complex systems of governing ourselves because lynch mobs were a problem, why in the Internet age are we reverting.

Entitled? No way. I think he's guilty as hell. But I think they agree to a buyout to make this go away as quickly and quietly as possible.

I wandered over to an Ohio State board to see their reaction about Meyer and it’s pretty incredible. Most of them were railing against “fake news,” CNN, ESPN and its liberal slant, all members of the media in general, and the witch hunt against Urban Meyer. It was pretty clear they were fans of Trump and it’s amusing because the GOP is the party that loves to claim they’re all for personal accountability, but apparently it’s always the media’s fault.

If you keep Urban Meyer and explain that he had plausible deniability - basically, Shelley Meyer falling on the sword saying she told Urban nothing about the abuse she clearly knew about - the message you're sending future coaches is to wrap yourselves in enough of a bubble that you have the ability to deny knowledge of wrongdoing. That is exactly the wrong message to send. I don't think it's a message Ohio State wants to send, no matter how successful Meyer is. Every interview for the next year is going to have a question about this. Bad PR over and over and over. I genuinely think OSU's hands are tied. They have to let him go. As with Penn State, Michigan State and now Ohio State, I just feel bad for the fans of these programs who just want their coaches to do their damned jobs and keep their noses clean. These are respectable people, just like Nebraska Fans, who want nothing to do with defending their institution over stuff like this. I just hope we're lucky enough that this never happens to Nebraska. Like those fans, we don't deserve it.

Thats why I'm getting a kick out of the mass denial all over social media "no direct proof" etc. His freaking wife as well as his director of operations wife both make mention of "he" in the context of Urban Meyer. It's in black and white. Urban has never been a clean program kind of guy.

I think administrative leave is similar to the Art Briles situation in the sense that Ohio State’s legal team is combing through the contract to determine a way to fire him with cause and get out of paying any sort of severance. You have to remember he just signed a contact extension through 2023, I believe. McMurphy still has a lot of ammo in the form of additional texts and photos, so it’ll only get messier if Ohio state tries to play it off.
