  1. Hello Huskers! I know you have all missed my amazingly insightful posts over the past few years but I have returned with many gifts of good news which will help bouy up your spirits concerning the current football season that has just begun! 1. Iowa State is still undefeated. 2. Iowa State sits atop the Big 12 Conference...alphabetically. 3. Iowa State is still in the running for the National Title 4. Texas has pretty much been eliminated from winning the National Title 5. The entire state of Texas has pretty much been eliminated from winning National Title 6. Iowa looked very average beating a severely overhyped Wyoming team 7. Iowa State shall demolish Iowa next weekend, removing them from contention for a conference title There was some other stuff but I forgot what it was. Meanwhile...I was able to see most of the Husker game Saturday but missed some of the 2nd half cuz we were on stage and there was this nice looking blonde with big boobs and...well...you know how it is. The main thing I took away from it was that your Corners better learn to shed blocks a little more aggressively or you'll be looking at that stupid flat screen all year AND if you have to play a 3-4, you need to find a hybrid linebacker in the old Randy White mold to make it effective or you're gonna get shelled. The 3-4 will work if you flex to present unpredictably but playing it straight up for an entire game is just asking for exploitation. Have a nice week. There will always be a place for you in the Big 12 when you come to your senses. Apparently we still have a couple extra numbers.

  2. As a former member of the media, I think this is no big deal. Sure, it gives the writers and sports directors fewer quotes to work with on Sunday. There's plenty of stuff from Riley and others to sift through. Do your jobs and use what you have. Honestly, this is the OWH, et al being petty crybabies. "He doesn't give us quotes? We'll show him!"

  3. Even if Diaco does the post game interview one of two things happens. A. Bob takes full blame, says he's a terrible coach and came up with a pi$$ poor game plan. Shatel calls it unacceptable for a coach getting paid $825,000 a year. B. Bob gives answers full of coach talk that may, or may not match what was seen on the field. Shatel calls it unacceptable for a coach getting paid $825,000 a year. Throw me in the group that thinks this is a mountain of a mole hill. Not only that, it sure feel likes the media with an ego problem. Just calling a spade a spade.

  4. I believe Arkansas State was #96 in total offense last year. We didn't run into a buzzsaw. We just played like balsa wood.

  5. Something that is being lost: the D really only gave up 27 points. 24 if the rules had been properly applied in the first half.

  6. 1. We were a safety and a bobbled non-catch in the end zone by the ASU receiver from being defeated by a Sun Belt team. 2. Lee has the potential of being our best throwing QB since Ganz in my opinion. We'll see how it plays out against better D of the Big 10 and if our OL holds up.. 3. The D reporting and coach speak was all 4. If we don't improve on D - 5-7 record and bring on Scott Frost (Ok - had to mention that to get the Frost sighting rumors started) 5. DPE looked back to form based on the called back TD but was under utilized much of the game. 6. Nice to see the TE being used - one for good blocking and one for pass catching 7. Where was our fullback on that 'too long to develop' play in the end zone that resulted in a safety. It would have been nice to see him pick up that blitzing safety that was dreadfully missed by the OL. That play in the end zone had me baffled - I could have cut all of my toe nails by the time Bryan got close to the line of scrimmage. Blame that on Langs and the missed OL block. 8. Did I say the D looked terrible 9. OL a bit better than last year but again refer to # 1 - this was a Sun Belt Conf team. 10. MR almost pulled off a Bo when he tried to throw his head set to the ground - unfortunately the wires got wrapped around him.. He showed some emotion for once - maybe he knows this is a 'do or your gone' year and his D didn't look the part. Maybe he realized that his great hire of new DC may not have been as great as he thought. 11. When you scrimmage against yourself the D looks better. Thus the hype. This says 2 things - the O isn't as good if the D looked great in practice and second - real games tell the real story - and did I say the D looked terrible?? 12 Trying to put pressure on the QB with 3 guys without a solid, active blitz package should be criminal - you are hanging the CB and safety out to dry(esp since the LBs looked flat footed all night except one)

  8. I was chasing elk all weekend with very minimal cell coverage and didn't see the game until today. By the pitchforks and torches types of comments on Huskerboard, I was expecting something much worse than what I saw. Arkansas State looks to be an athletic team, who had nothing to lose, and whose strengths fit very well against our defense. They had every reason to play loose and aggressive and did so. Our team is still sorting out a new defense that is likely most designed to stop the power of the Big 10 rather than the pass happy spread we used to see in the Big 12. I remember when Bo had great spread defenses but couldn't stop the power game... I'm hoping that this defense is the opposite and that it was kept very simple by Diaco since the game was never really in threat, until the very last minute when AState had some very good breaks go their way compounded by our guys looking to fatigue or tighten up a bit. The way the game ended gave people a very emotionally colored view of the whole game IMO. Very excited by our offensive performance. I think we will see good things this year, though Oregon does concern me as they're a turbo charged version of Arkansas State. I'm hoping that Diaco has some cards up his sleeve and that his defense will shine in the games that matter most.

  10. never said either one of those things- you are putting words in my mouth for the sake of a few +1's. I just don't see how you can follow the entirety of Parsons' recruitment and assume this is a good thing for Nebraska. Its your (and the other sunshine pumpers) opinion, you're entitled to think differently on it. But when he's visited tOSU multiple times and only been to UNL once, has the relationship he has with Larry Johnson, every crystal ball from the year of 2017 has been placed for tOSU, wore tOSU gloves during his game last week, moves up his OV to this week against Oklahoma, and has been on record saying he will commit soon... it doesn't exactly spell out to being a good thing for Nebraska. Not to mention the entire reason he decommitted from Penn State was because he went to a tOSU camp and fell in love with it there. Oh. And he isn't even 100% sure the OV for Wisconsin game will take place because the ACT is that weekend. I get it, you think me pointing out these things somehow means I'm "spinning" against the Huskers and it makes me a bad fan for doing so. Do I think Micah likes Nebraska? Absolutely. Do I think he likes Ohio State more? Read the above and tell me why that wouldn't be the case.. We'll find out soon enough. I'll gladly be wrong on this- we need players like Parsons in the worst way. But until someone of this caliber is signed, sealed, and delivered for Nebraska I'll say that programs like tOSU will almost always remain in the drivers seat for their services.

  13. No one? Pretty sizable contingent of people on this very board contend the problem has been the University's unwillingness to open the checkbook for premium coaching talent, dating back to Solich's firing. Please don't make me go back and pull quotes. You might be in there. Herman and McElwain are two coaches we would presumably have preferred over Riley (doubtful they'd have come here) and their opening games at legendary football programs have fans in no less of an uproar than we are here. A Regent at Texas A&M publicly called for Kevin Sumlin's firing. And the "only an idiot? line. Geez. I don't know. Not all of these guys are idiots. Tom Lemming ‏@LemmingReport Only time will tell but my guess is Mike Riley will bring Nebraska back to national prominence. Scott Shanle ‏@scottshanle After hearing from many people who know Mike Riley personally I am optimistic about the future of @Huskers football. Sean Callahan ‏@Sean_Callahan Another interesting tidbit about Mike Riley is he opened all practices at Oregon State to media and fans. Also the fact USC courted him in 2011, and Alabama offered him their job in 2002 intrigues me on what drew him to make this move now? Dan Hoppen ‏@danhoppen Mike Riley was heavily rumored to replace Pete Carroll at USC in 2010, Dennis Franchione at Alabama in 2002. He must like NU’s prospects. Mike Farrell ‏@rivalsmike I may be in the minority here but I like the Riley hire for #Huskers better than the McElwain hire for #Gators. Thoughts? Mark McMillian ‏@MarkMcMillian29 If Mike Riley offered my son or any kid I coach I would send them in a heartbeat this man is all about the kids & families #GBR #Nebraska Rich Kaipust ‏@RKaipustOWH I liked this poll back in September because it was a vote of coaching peers -- and Mike Riley scored high on it http://es.pn/1Dc1ACC Brian Christopherson ‏@HuskerExtraBC Remember this when viewing Riley's record at OSU. 16. Trump's approval rating (or, his "disapproval" rating) is about bottomed out. Short of murdering children on live TV, I don't think there's anything he could do at this point to lose the people that are still supporting him and attending his rallies. I don't think any decision he's making anymore has anything to do with how it'll look to anyone. He's not going to craft policy with anyone but his hardcore base in mind from now on.

  17. So, I've been in the same position as you all, and early on in Diaco's tenure I had a lot of the same thoughts as you all. I appreciated Bob's energy and funny soundbites. The first time an issue with the press came up, I figured it was just the CT news guys being curmudgeons. I sort of ignored the idiocy or childlike behavior until it was evident that our team was awful and BD was unwilling to adapt or change from his narrow vision in any way, shape or form. This week you saw a typical Bob Diaco defensive gameplan--it's not gonna change. He will consistently play DBs 10 yards off the line of scrimmage, regardless of opponent. He will never bring pressure. You will stay in base defense. His one strength will be a strong rush defense, as someone alluded to earlier in this thread. When he fails, he'll be incredibly defensive and come up with every excuse in the book, and will even somehow believe that his unit was successful. I predict that this is just the first instance in a long line of disappointments and bizarre happenings. I say none of this to incite you guys, but just to sort of come to you as a fellow football fan and let you know how incredibly frustrating the guy is, and really how unstable of a guy he is. I've never seen anything like it, and I've sat through plenty of bad football. If you all are smart, you won't give him the benefit of the doubt for long. Hope he leaves sooner rather than later. When I saw what you guys paid him, I really couldn't believe it. In any case, good luck this season. I hope that you guys can win in spite of Diaco. If you guys have any questions about what to expect moving forward or more about what we saw at UConn, feel free to ask. And if you think I'm just a pissed off fan who dislikes his former coach, that's cool too--you'll see in time!

  18. Sorry if any of the following has been mentioned already but I'm really too lazy to read 4 pages to take account of what has been brought up. Here are my observations This is the first time in 8 years we don't have a converted DB playing QB and it shows. Lee is as good as it gets. A few more games behind him and his timing with the receivers will be even better. WR's left some catches out on the field Saturday night. The OL played about as good as it has in a long time. The RB went for almost 200. Lee took some shots but in game one, I would say I was happy with the overall performance. Having said that, Farmer and Knevel should be on thin ice. Farmer whiffed a couple of times getting to the next level to block a LB coming in and Farniok was pretty good subbing for Knevel when he went out with the injury. Defensively, the front 3 did what they were supposed to do. They took on 5 OL. Can't ask much more of them with the defense that was called. And it showed with the low number of rushing yards allowed. Newby and Young are absolute crap in pass defense. As in they are a liability. If ASU's QB wasn't throwing to the sideline, the WR was slanting right behind either of those 2 and moving the chains Lee didn't look good at all at CB. I would also say that help to his side was very slow to arrive. I'll chalk it up to game inexperience and see how he responds in the next game. Punting was good. Nice to Lightbourn bounce back after last season The PR TD given up was a fluke. I'm not worried about that being a thing. Until it is. But overall ST was good. Still can't get DPE loose on PR, though. Need to figure something out.

  19. The thing that bothered me the most was that Husker defenders went out and talked to the press, but the Defensive Coordinator didn't. If you're going to send your players out there to answer questions about that game, you had damned sure better be willing to answer questions yourself.

  23. The absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence (of ability, in this case). For you to have a point, there would need to be plenty of 60+ year old coaches who did what Riley is doing and failed. Then you could point to the data and say, "See, look! It doesn't work."
    2 points
  24. I don't think this is unreasonable - all I'm asking for is a scenario with qualifier #1, qualifier #2, qualifier #3, qualifier #4, and then 4 more qualifiers to weed out any possible qualifiers. The situation with Riley is fairly unique and unprecedented. That doesn't mean a single thing towards whether or not it can work out how we all hope. @unlfan, how many examples can you give of power 5 coaches in their 60's with 15+ years of college HC experience at the same school in their hometown who then decided to go coach at a different school?

  27. I think its a good thing we get a crack at him after ohio state. I actually think he is a silent to nebraska at the moment. He raves about NU and posts tons of nebraska stuff. I think it was Josh Moore said we have a 5 star silent. Who else would it be? Not in on any 5 stars at the moment. Perhaps he wants to commit publicly sooner than later so he moved up ohio state visit so thats done so when he comes for nebraska he can say he took his other top visit so he could commit on site at wisconsin. Or maybe thats just me being optimistic.

  30. Also, from what I've heard, there was already blood drawn. Fairly standard procedure to get a blood sample upon admittance. The officers just needed to wait for a warrant if they wanted access to the samples. There was a SCOTUS ruling siting when a blood sample may be taken from a person from law enforcement. They are the reasons the nurse gave; With a warrant, with consent, if the person is under arrest. That is it. I think the guys screwed up. If you watch the released body cam footage, they realize it later.

  34. This isn't really directed at you, zoogs, but your post is a good jumping off point for some of my thoughts. First, my impression of Diaco's reaction is that things got incredibly personal. People called him a coward and gutless after one game and, to me, that's entirely unacceptable. It doesn't matter how much money he's making because he doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. I find it deplorable that we have fans and media members using this kind of language. I think Benning put it pretty well on his show this morning - the reaction from fans and some media members causes divisiveness in the fan base and breeds contempt between fans and the media. It causes many people to pick a side and it's just not right. Second, the fan angle has always held some weight with me. It doesn't mean everything, but tickets are expensive, traveling to Lincoln is expensive and eating/drinking while there is expensive. It's a significant monetary investment being a fan. It's also a huge reason most of these guys have jobs and are afforded their salary. Wanting to hear from "the" defensive guy is a reasonable request because we, as fans, have had that opportunity with past DC's. Now, that doesn't mean this how things always have to be done. Diaco also said some things Monday that I thought were more than just coach speak. tl;dr I won't begrudge people that want to hear from Diaco after something like that. I don't usually look at interviews, but I know a lot of people do. I just think there's a modicum of respect owed to all parties and it seemed to be missing this weekend in a variety of ways.

  35. I wonder if you got the point I was trying to make, about how some fans will be happy he did up downs to pay for his transgressions against them. This whole issue is just about people (fans and media) wanting to extract their pound of flesh for a subpar defensive performance. It's why so many are up in arms that Bobby missed the walk of shame immediately following the game.

  36. The only thing stuck in a freight elevator seems to be the Huskers...for about the past 20 years. Also, if you think that Bob didn't know the media wanted to talk to him you are crazy. You know why he waited an hour in the box? Take a guess. Zoogs was right, this very much (to me) seemed like a Bo type of thing.

Then in camp some complained that we must not have good RBs because there was going to be a committee. Then in the first game, we have a RB run 31 times and almost reach 200 yards. However, some people still complain. Classic.

  43. 1. We were plus 2 in turnover margin with QB making his first start for N. Zero turnovers on a night a new QB passed the ball 32 times and we ran the ball 38 times. 2. A punting game like last night can decide close games later this season. 3. We showed explosive big play capability on the ground and through the air. That's a defenses worst nightmare. 4. We showed we can pound the rock, have a go to back, and capable backups. 5. Lee showed composure, accuracy, good decision making, and that he can lead this offense and get all the playmakers around him involved. 6. FG's 2 for 2 7. D playing new positions and scheme, generated 2 important turnovers. In 82 plays defended, allowed just one to go for more than 30 yards. I think aTm gave up 10 times that many in the 2nd half tonight. 8. I learned Husker football in 2017 is off to an exciting start. If you weren't entertained by that game, maybe you've forgot how to enjoy them one week at a time and not worry about the future implications of every single play. We WON.
