  1. Hey, I think Scott Frost is the best solution for everything that ails us right now. But if he's the only man who can save Nebraska football, and any other coach will plunge us into depression, then this is more of a cult than a football program.

  2. This probably belongs in Politics & Religion more than Husker Football, but I see why you put it here. The conversation is going to be heavily politicized. I am very uncomfortable with the militarization of football, especially at the college (amateur) level. It is deliberate, and it's been noticed by a lot of people. Football Shaped by Military Pentagon Paid Up To $6.8 Million Of Taxpayer Money To Pro Sports Teams For Military Tributes There's a difference between patriotism and jingoism. One is a healthy love and respect for your country - which we should all have (and if you don't have it, you have to work to make your country worth having it). The other, jingoism, is an extremist love of country, often characterized by aggression. Jingoism is a tool used by governments to control the people - and ours uses it to control us.

  3. Is anyone else uncomfortable with how much the DoD seems to be embedding itself into athletics, particularly football, on both the collegiate and professional levels? It isn't healthy. Who at the university is responsible for things such this past weekend's Veteran and Military Appreciation game?

  7. C’mon guys, can’t you see the strain? Surely we can’t expect this defense to be tackling effectively yet. For sure not well enough to win a game.

  8. Well the worst part is that the military now apparently OWNS the national anthem, and any criticism of the United States suddenly becomes a slap in the face of brave servicemen. Patriotism is the refuge of cowards, as someone once said.

  11. What are you disagreeing with? First off, everyone (everyone sane, that is) really thanks you and respects you. At the game last weekend we shook the hands of the people in active service or those (like my dad) who have already served. It was fun to reach around and shake their hands, pat their backs, and show them that we thank and respect them for what they did. It was also really, really neat to see the service men & women, both retired and active duty, introduced on the field. Bomber pilots from WWII & Korea, veterans of Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq, and currently active people. We gave them one hell of an ovation, because we love and respect them. But some people, like me, are concerned that bad people in our government (nod if you agree we have bad people in our government) have and will misuse our brave folks in uniform for their own ends. That is what this thread, and our concern is about. Do not make the mistake of thinking people are anti-military. I'm not, and I don't think anyone responding so far is (OK except one guy, but he can explain his comments himself). To answer your question - absolutely, if I saw someone harming an innocent person, I would step in. Almost everyone here would. You, with your training, would do a far better job than those of us who are untrained. But we'd still try.

  13. You pay him millions of dollars to GO AWAY!!! Who cares about the money, and how it's spent. Yes, he's well-liked and a nice and classy guy, but if you kept him around the athletic program, it would hurt the next coach. You would have players that were brought to the University to Riley, and who probably think that Riley should still be their coach, and if Riley is kept around they may want to be loyal to their coach. The University needs to move on from Riley. It's been a failed 3-year experiment, and MOVE ON!!!

  16. What's really going to be sad is after all this circus has left town and some time has passed, we're going to get even more stories about how completely disfunctional Riley's staffs have been over the last three years. Then (maybe) people will finally realize that the blame actually does lie almost completely with the coaches and not the lack of talent, toxic environment, etc. etc. etc.

  17. Eh, he had Nebraska back to its failsafe 9-4 season last year, and opened this season with a significant number of his own recruits, including a quarterback who wowed really smart football folk at the big quarterback camps, and threw his own DC under the bus for an innovative new DC with a respected national profile. It wasn't crazy to expect improvement over the previous year, and I think fans would have shown patience if they saw the pieces coming together, even in losses. Riley probably lost his job against Northern Illinois, and definitely against Wisconsin. We can say we saw this potentially 4-8 season coming, but I don't think that many people really did. If you want to congratulate yourself on this foresight, have at it.

  22. Sadly, the person Riley needs to replace is himself. This is his offense it is the same offense he has run for 30 years. I can't stress this enough, when there is no QB run game at all...it makes the life of the opposing DC so easy.

  23. Sean Callahan and Mike Farrell have a nice take on the situation in my point of view. I've been thinking the same things they said on a rivals article. I'm posting as a quote because the website formatting is atrocious don't know if it's just me. FIRST TAKE: SEAN CALLAHAN, HUSKERONLINE.COM “It's really hard to say a lot, because Mike Riley still remains the coach and a change hasn't been made. With that said, I would compare Scott Frost to Jim Harbaugh for Michigan fans or Tom Herman for Texas fans. He's a guy with a local connection that is really doing well, and his success at UCF this season is hard to ignore. He's also from Nebraska and his parents live in Lincoln, as do many of his best friends. If a change was ever made at Nebraska, he's obviously the logical guy fans would want.” SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM “Nebraska would be the best place. He would have the full support of the athletics director. He would have the full support of the alumni and the community and the fan base. He’s an ex-player and Nebraska would be the home run for him. “Florida, the pressure to win there is intense. The next guy in is going to be under immediate scrutiny. He’ll have longer to work with Nebraska and he’s going into a conference division that is wide open. The West is not a dominant division in the Power Five so Nebraska makes the most sense. “Add in the comments the new AD made about Frost, the fact that Nebraska lost three-straight at home and might not make a bowl, and that the fan base has pretty much given up on Riley and wants a change. They would have to beat Minnesota and then upset Penn State or Iowa to even get to six wins. I don’t think they’re going to get to a bowl. I think they’re going to lose four straight at home and I think he’s gone.” What Farrell said pretty much hits exactly the points I have seen in the whole situation. 28. The problem is Trump (and most everyone in the GOP I've seen argue against gun control) are arguing with a strawman. Trump is arguing that by cracking down on guns, we're somehow going to take guns away from the good guys (the hero in this story) but NOT the bad guy (the shooter). He seems to be arguing against a complete gun ban in which the bad guys somehow still find guns (which is a popular talking point for pro-gun folks). The problem is no one I know is arguing that. If they are, they certainly aren't in the mainstream. Most folks are just crying out to do something! Anything we do has to be better than this. Hell, if we even followed the laws on the books (and the Air Force reported this guy's domestic abuse history), Sunderland Springs may not have happened. But Trump and others in his party insist on arguing against an argument no one is making, because it serves their agenda to argue absolutes & make everything black & white. Nuance is hard.

  29. Does anyone wonder if Tom Osborne would recommend against Frost coming here? Not that Florida would be a better environment , but there are probably many programs with much less constant vitriol and overscrutinizing than Nebraska. I continue to believe that Frost is a man, he’s 40, and he knows everything he needs to know to make a decision about coming here. I don’t think he needs advice about it from anyone.

  32. First - Are expectations at Washington State the same as they are at Nebraska? Second - People like to throw out an outlier here and there as if it means something in the grand scheme. For each one example there are dozens of counter-examples where it didn't work out. Third - Leach's nine wins in his first two years were as many wins as they had in the four years before he got there. So I'm somewhat skeptical that there were as many people ready for him to go as you'd like to indicate. Fourth - Even though thery were only 3-9, they were a Top 10 passing team in the country. It also took a Heisman effort from Marcus Mariotta to keep Wsu from beating then-#2 Oregon. So there were other signs of hope even if the record didn't show it.

  35. I also served. And I think it's ridiculous for the DoD to pay for tributes at sporting events. Run recruiting commercials during the game? Fine. Exploit patriotism by paying for tributes? No.

  36. Seriously... I’m currently serving my country and would like to enlighten both of you about the military. For the past six months I have barely been home. I started with aviation training to help rescue civilians incase of a natural or man made disaster took place in the United States. After I returned, I was called up to help during Hurricane Irma in Florida. I recently returned home from a transportation mission. None of these involved weapons of any sort. The majority of service members don’t want to go to war. We signed the dotted line and will follow orders. We have a volunteer force and the services have to recruit. I can tell you if someone trys to harm innocent people around me, I will tell my wife and children I love them and then would try to stop them. Would you? I love my country and state. GBR

  38. Good post. And this is bore out by the budget these repubs support. They have no conservative credibility left nor do they have the right to be critical of the previous adminstation's budget. I expect big spending from liberals and for the most part it will be with good intentions. These guys, however speak with forked tongue. I suspect it was the same types that negotiated with the Indian tribes - swindlers of the worst kind. Presenting themselves as one thing to the voters and doing another in DC.

  39. And this is why we should not be surprised that this happened. There is no intent for it NOT to happen. People don't make money when guns/ammo/gun parts aren't sold. It will happen again and again and again and again while we continue to put profit over peoples' lives.

  43. I really don't think @LaunchCode and others are that far off in thinking Riley could do much better next year and going forward. I really really don't think Riley and staff are as bad as they are made out to be. That said, he's gone and we will have a new HC on the sidelines in 2018. Like Riley, don't like Riley it really doesn't matter. He hasn't had full support from the beginning and he hasn't done anything to improve his support, his on field results have done the opposite. It may not be fair but Riley is toast and if we get Frost in here he will be supported much more universally which I think will help. Any other coach and it really becomes a case by case basis. I'm game to switch Riley for Frost or Campbell, but man I would rather not drop Riley to pick up another bad hire. Keep Riley>hire another bad coach.

  44. The fact that Riley earns more money in ONE game than 98% of Nebraskans earn in one WHOLE YEAR OR MORE is A CRIMINAL OFFENSE. I mean what does he do to earn that money? Chew gum, look clueless and beat in every game, and buy Shame Flavored Ice Cream for the team after each loss? That must be the easiest job in the world. Like plucking money from a money tree...not even, it is like hiring someone else to do the plucking of money while you chew gum. My new SHARK TANK idea is to make Shame Flavored Gum and call it THE RILEY.

  45. Just let the situation play out and judge it when it happens. There is no point in being negative about it when it hasnt happened. Moos was a left field hire because people only want athletic directors they know which is like two or three ADs. Moos seems like a great fit the more you look into it. He has been at places that need to be rebuilt and has done it successfully before. Plus he has a midwestern type of personality. Good fit for Nebraska I think. I trust him.

  46. If Riley stays, you'll see the fan base explode, the sellout streak end and the enthusiasm of fans go away. Loved the Huskers for years, but hard to watch the constant excuse of a product he puts on the field. We have some great kids on the team. I feel bad many used their eligibility playing for this staff.
