  1. We literally lost to northern Illinois. You’re not being realistic

  2. The OP paints Riley in a light that just isn't accurate. He absolutely is an average coach with average results, the numbers don't lie and unfortunately his time here has been disappointing overall. But Mike Riley the man, Mike Riley the coach, Mike Riley the recruiter....he doesn't deserve the backlash like that. He came here and has tried to win games, change the culture and make the program proud. The resuls haven't been much better than the rest of his career, this is true. But this isn't us parting with a man that came to resent us and us likewise. After Riley is gone, I'm not going to piss and moan about his tenure here. He tried and came up short, but he did it with class and he did it like a professional. In the long run I feel he is doing one thing he was hired to do, change this program for the future. When the next guy takes the reigns he is leaving them a much better situation than some want to admit.

  3. This has to be sarcasm right? I mean, it is poorly executed and doesn't fit the post, but it has to be sarcasm. Cook has 500 wins at over 88% winning percentage, 7 Final Fours, and 3 National Championships (and a runner up) in 17 seasons.

  4. The never endng Riley bashing is just nonsense at this point. Riley may not be the best head coach of all time but he is certainly not as bad as some of these comments state. Our football team is not very good and hasn't been for 15 years. This team is not as bad as some comments suggest. The difference between winning and losing many games in this day and age is often the difference between a few bad or good officiating calls, a couple dropped balls or missed tackles, etc. We should be winning most of oru games with plenty of margin to spare but this has not been the case in about 20 years. We are a middle of the pack (at best) program with a middle of the pack (at best) team. The next head coach (whomever it turns out to be) will have a rough time of it and unless the fans GET REAL and recognize that the rebuilding process will be a LONG TERM (7 to 10 years) process, then we will continue this endless merry-go-round process of hire and fire circle jerk. Riley is not to blame for all of the ills that are plaguing our football team and program in general. There are issues within each and every Husker sports program frankly and many are not new or even all that recent. Men's basketball has not been good forever. Baseball has always been mediocre but for a couple seasons for a brief splash of time. Men's gynastics at one time was dominant nationally but has been nothing special for a couple decades. Women's BB had a couple seasons but again has fallen into the shadows. Our track program was once a national power but not so sure we measure up that way now. Swimming and diving fell from the sky. We can shoot an air rifle and roll a bowling ball pretty well I guess but let's get real, the athletic department has been slacking for ever since "Dollar" Bill Byrne departed for south Texas. I didn't like Byrne but looking back he did do some good things apparently that have not been continued by his sucessors. Let's hope we find we shoot the "Moon' with our new guy. I also should add that volleyball has had its moments and seems to fall a bit short of the expecations. We are either overrated quite often or we underperform under coach Cook. Are we going to fire him too?

  5. Had to read that second sentence 3 or 4 times. Riley is 0-1 against the MAC and a TD win against a Sun Belt team who lost by 3 TDs against SMU. I'm not saying Riley is bad, but let's be realistic about him.

  6. If Frost was not an NU alum...would you know who he was as of right now? I am guessing even if he wasn't an NU alum that more of us would know who he was over Riley. Think about that for a second...it really goes to show just how horrible and uninspired the Riley hire really was.

  7. Considering the admins went with a search firm and our lack of success without a search firm the last two times, I'd be really surprised if we don't use one this time around. The only way we wouldn't is if everyone is all in on Frost and they have him lined up before the season ends.

  8. Threads like this are why I've been coming to this site less and less. Frost is a demi god, Riley is a piece of poo. it gets old

  9. That's not exactly a new thing for them to do. Remember in 2015? It was "we have the talent to compete, win championships, etc..." Then we lose a bunch of games (that we shouldn't have) and it's suddenly a rebuilding job.

  12. Not trying to be funny. These types of posts annoy me because it's a crappy look on our fan base.

  13. More campaigning that we need to get rid of Riley even though it's already a foregone conclusion. More "I told you so from day one" patting self on back blathering. I seriously can't wait for this season to be over so the experts can discuss something else.

  14. The question is, can Riley get his team to win three extremely winnable games in a row heading into a very difficult matchup? Purdue will come down to whether Nebraska wants to win, and that includes the coaches. This is an easy exam if you studied for it, but you may not pass if you were out partying instead.

  16. Man you guys twist everything. Nobody is saying they dont want Frost. People are just saying there are other qualified candidates besides Scott Frost that can coach at Nebraska next year. If its Frost ill get behind him. If its someone else Ill get behind them. Can you say the same thing?

  17. Coach Frost has two wins against teams with a winning record this year and both will be in bowl games. Out of the remaining games, there are two schools with a winning record. All for 4 those teams will be in bowl games. There isn't an Alabama, Washington, Ohio State, Penn State, etc, on their schedule. He has dominated weak teams with average talent. That is what a good coach does. Just like how Urban Meyer dominated teams in his undefeated year at Utah. Urban didn't play any ranked teams that regular season either. He worked out ok I would say.

  19. First off that link probably belongs in a different section. Secondly, don't think "alpha" in the negative way that you so badly want to think of it...you are thinking of a loud mouthed, in your face, screaming ass...that is not "alpha" that is an a-hole. Alpha dogs come in many different forms. I am guessing that within your group of friends, zoogs, that you are an alpha dog but I am guessing you are not the yell in your face, scream at the people, get chesty and square up type...but that surely doesn't mean you are not an alpha dog. It is not about showing your teeth...it is about not having to show your teeth. It is about confidence in what you know and do. TO was very much an alpha dog, listen to his former players...they were terrified of him because they knew he was the man and they knew they didn't want to let him down.

  20. We've been around this merry-go-round a thousand times already. Nothing is gained by insisting on arguing it again. No one has any evidence to prove it or prove it was invented. It happened 15 years ago. People will believe what they want to believe. It has absolutely no bearing on anything now. Let it drop.

  22. We all want Nebraska to be successful. Some people want national titles, others want conference titles. Some want to be Wisconsin and others just want to be relevant. Here's what I know. To get there, Nebraska needs to be the best team in the Big 10 West. To do that, they have to be better than Wisconsin. Before that, they need to be better than Iowa and the other teams in the division. I think hiring Frost is the right way to accomplish that.

  23. Here are a few points for those worried about Frost's style of offense. These shouldn't be used as proof, but evidence that it could work very well in Lincoln. Nebraska had some good offenses under Bo Pelini. The offenses in 2010, 2012 and 2014 had similarities to what Frost does. The 2010 offense averaged 398.1 yards per game, 247.6 rushing yards per game, 5.5 yards per carry and 30.9 points per game. The O struggled after Martinez was injured against Missouri, but it was good before that. The 2012 offense averaged 460.8 yards per game, 253.4 rushing yards per game, 5.4 yards per carry and 34.8 points per game. A healthy(ish) Martinez along with Burkhead, Abdullah, Bell and Enunwa was tough to stop. The 2014 offense averaged 452.3 yards per game, 240.2 rushing yards per game, 5.3 yards per carry and 37.8 yards per game. Abdullah and Armstrong playing in a offense they were built for. They struggled with elite defenses, but they could move the ball and score. These offenses were all pretty good with Barney Cotton as an offensive line coach and with either Shawn Watson or Tim Beck as offensive coordinator. Now remember that Frost is a better offensive coach than either Shawn Watson or Tim Beck. Most importantly, he is more creative. Frost can get the ball to J.D. Spielman, Tyjon Lindsey and Tre Bryant in space.

  24. I think what Mike is meaning to say is it's a lack of developed talent. But yet, he doesn't point out that the problem for not developing talent lies on... well, not Mike apparently. I've brought this up before, but it should be said again: Pelini perhaps wasn't the best recruiter, that's fine and an okay thing to admit. But he recruited better than NIU and they came here and WON. That makes the lack of talent argument completely irrelevant.

  25. You all don't want Matt Campbell...he...uh...shuts his lights off and pretends not to be home on Halloween...and...um...takes candy from babies and kicks puppies and kitties and...uh...other real bad stuff. Definitely not the kind of guy Nebraska would want leading their football team...better look somewhere else.

  26. I'm not a Riley fan and have felt embarrassed this year as well by our fundamentals and lack of coaching and a game plan etc. But this crap is so dumb. I mean really, we have a toxic culture? I could come up with so many worse things to happen to a program and you say we have currently have a toxic culture? That whole post was way over dramatic. "My beloved huskers", "toxic culture", "hanging on by the skin of its teeth", You say Riley starts players without putting in any work, but yet if he were to have a stud five star recruit who he didn't play you would be complaining he isn't playing them. I think the coaches see the effort in practice on the daily, more so than you. "EVERY time this team fails, Mike lets it be known it is the players fault and lack of talent." Really, go listen to some press conferences and tell me he hasn't taken ownership for some things. This thread is stupid and you sound like a lying whining baby who is over dramatic. Worry more about the legacy and culture of our fan base.

  28. I still don't understand if we go 4-1 how people would be back on the Riley ship. Anyone that took the time today to watch Purdue, northwestern, Iowa, or Minnesota should know by now that these teams are absolute garbage. We will be in dog fights with each of them too, but it shouldn't change a thing. A lone second place finish in the west and a bowl game? Cool story. The B1G west could easily be the worst power 5 division in college football. It sure as hell is when taking wisconsin out of the picture. The thought of Riley bringing Nebraska back to prominence is laughable. The hire was for the image, not what was best for Husker football. This experiment was a joke to begin with. Because a .500 coach with a 30 year sample size was all of sudden going to be a championship contender? HA! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

  30. I’m going to try to avoid the hype train and ask some questions and point out a few things I think may be applicable. UCF plays in the AAC. That’s not exactly P5 level competition. Can we just start playing Navy, Tulsa, Temple, Tulane and the like now? It just feels like football light. I mean the current version of the Huskers would probably struggle with it but shouldn’t we set our sights higher? I am not sold on his offense at all. Most of what I’ve seen is the result of poor defense and freak big plays. I don’t see that being near as prolific in the B1G. And those penalty problems would hint at some concerns about the team playing disciplined ball. Im sorry but I’m just not sold at all that this is the best Nebraska can do at this point. IF he is truly the rising star most claim then yes, maybe we can’t afford to not snatch him up now. But my preference would still be to get a more proven commodity that wants to return Nebraska to a team that controls the LOS, plays nasty defense and establishes and relies on the run instead of this cutesy finesse sling it around the yard stuff. Haven’t we had our fill of that with Callahan and Riley? I sure have.

  31. Yeah, sorry. I just can't go to the place where Mike Riley doesn't care, isn't trying, or is happily absconding with our money. Things didn't work out. Mike Riley is surely gone this season. Let's not get too ugly pushing him out the door. Whatever you personally think about him, Riley enjoyed tremendous respect within the coaching community. That's the same place we'll be hiring our next coach from.

  32. No, they don’t. Nebraska has the fourth or fifth-best team in terms of talent based off of recruiting standings (depending on the service referenced). Purdue is excelling because of quality coaching and instruction. They don’t have depth, they don’t have as many playmakers as we do. But they’re well coached, the players know their roles, and they excel because of that instruction. And it’s this superior coaching that will most likely net them a win Saturday night, sad to say.

  34. Scott Frost isn't qualified for Nebraska. Have you seen Nebraska's last hires. Clearly if you want to coach at Nebraska there has to be some kind of major flaw with you. We'll pick him up after he cusses out a ref or misses a bowl game or something.

  36. They beat Navy who was in the top 25 prior to their game. They beat Memphis who is currently in the top 25. They've won every game against the spread, by an average of over 17 points. They lead the nation in scoring and in margin of victory.

  37. You must be one of those people who can't see a good coach even if the future was already written out for you. Coach Frost is legit. Go and look at the numbers he put up at Oregon when he was calling plays. Look at what he has done with the UCF offense. The guy is a brilliant offensive mind and his system isn't complex to learn or operate. It's all about spreading you out and gutting you up vertically.

  40. I've been trying to point this out since Riley was hired - when all the "we're finally going to use the fullback again" partying was going on. This is one of the biggest reasons that we've struggled to run the ball the last three years. Husker Chalk Talk

  42. So, the o-line has more depth, but the o-line coach still sucks. The RB’s return, but he OC doesn’t want to use RB’s except to make sure they can block for the QB. Yes, the West is pretty crappy, but NU has become one of the crappy teams in the West. Riley is basically doing at NU, what he did the last 5 years at Oregon State. I understand he was pretty good from 2006-2009, but that’s when he peaked. Teams and coaches figured him out, and he has been Mediocre Mike for nearly a decade.

  43. I’m confused, we won 31-21 against Navy today?!
    2 points
  44. To be fair, we've done an excellent job of making teams look better against us than they do against everyone else. Arkansas State only has one game this year with more yards of offense than they had against us. Oregon is 1-4 in the Pac-12 and only one of those losses is closer than 17 points. Northern Illinois .... well ...... Rutgers lost to 2-5 Eastern Michigan We only scored fourth-most points against Illinois this year - and that was a "good" game for our offense. Rutgers scored 35.
