  1. Oh. I had forgotten it's colder in Nebraska sometimes than it is in Florida. Thank goodness there's another person to remind me.

  3. Yep. Few more years and we would have been able to complete a screen pass. Just didn't have enough time to get it done.

  6. The university has pissed away opportunities to promote themselves positively in recent years, particularly the athletic department. I'm personally familiar with one such relationship they couldn't effectively negotiate because they wanted to provide less of their product for more money. They then tried to come crawling back months later to see if some resolution could be found and the other part declined to entertain them. This was pre-Moos. Ultimately, Dirk is a reporter. It's not his job to shed the university in a positive light or be overly negative. IMO, I think he does sometimes go a bit too far but there's an audience for what he writes, and then there are other times he does incredible work.

  7. Not quoting that whole post from my phone. No, Nebraska is not in the middle of the division in talent. The recruiting rankings aren't perfect but they aren't far off. I believe we've had the best recruiting rank every single year in our division. At worst we're in 2nd. We just haven't had coaches who use it correctly and coach it to be better.

  8. well, the team has reached the half-way point of the season. they are 2-4 in Big 10 play, 14-14 overall, and the potential for regional play is essentially out the window. so much for the pre season pick of finishing #2 in the Big 10. I think we all started to think this season would go down hill when they lost at home to Northern Colorado and Northwestern State. anyway, one of the bright spots about this season has been the play of Scott Schreiber. Dude knew what he was doing when he came back for his senior season. Scott is hitting 0.389 and has 9 HRs already. with the remaining schedule, it is not a stretch to think he could hit 0.400 for the season. Scott's abilities at the plate are about the only thing that keeps me tuning into the games this year.

  11. There's only one problem with your "there's good and bad on both sides" assertion. In the past 10 years the Republicans have made it abundantly clear they will not compromise with Democrats for the betterment of the nation. From The Grand Bargain, to immigration, to healthcare, to just this year when Schumer would have funded the wall in exchange for making DACA recipients legal citizens. One party pretty much initiated the scuttling of negotiations when they didn't get exactly what they wanted. Sure people like Sasse and Flake talk a tough game against Trump, but they are either not running for office again, or their tough talk doesn't match their actions.

  14. This is the "scheme theme" month for The Solid Verbal, and they had the excellent Chris B Brown on to talk shop. Chris is a lawyer by day, and X's and O's nerd by night. He has his own site (smartfootball.com) and has written a couple really good books that talk about random football scheme stuff in common terms. I could read and listen to him all day. Anyway, on this episode, they talked about playcalling methods, terminology and tempo. And Chris gushed over Scott Frost... alot. Specifically the way he crafts his offense, calls plays, and uses tempo. https://www.solidverbal.com/2018/03/20/chris-b-brown-football-communication/ Check it out.

  15. This is a great topic, worth a listen. A huge part of what it means to define a system. Even though he didn't go into it because it's somewhat tangential, this topic is one reason why I really like how Frost allocates responsibility amongst the offensive staff. The past several Nebraska offensive coordinators, and many other schools, have the offensive coordinator be the QB coach, and be the play caller. That's really three jobs when you think about it; coordinating the entire offense, handling the QB, and calling the play. When the offensive coordinator is in the booth removed from these other roles, he can watch the game and make suggestions. He isn't thinking about what to tell the QB between series or figuring out the next play call. He can focus on how to fix the problem of that unblockable 3 tech. Humans aren't very good at multi-tasking. It's very hard for one person to macro level strategize, relay that information to other people with the detail level of a play call, and solve problems as they happen. Even though the offensive coordinator doesn't get the credit he should in this system, because most everyone does it a different way, it is in my mind a better way. You have the advantage of the play caller on the field where he can better communicate, but the coordinator with the vantage in the booth.

  16. Fisher quote from McKewon's article: "Whether they were coached like that or they decided to play like that, I don't know, but on film they played a little soft." Might be just a bit of an understatement... Tempted to switch my vote to Fisher. He has the right attitude to change the DB room to get some hitters in there. I like this whole coaching staff though, so it's hard to pick just one.

  17. When I was in journalism school a professor told some of us, “you sports guys need to learn news too.” I said “you news people need to learn sports too.” She said I was wrong. You can always tell when a news reporter/anchor doesn’t know a thing about the sports story they are covering. rant off. Hog-Molly away.

  21. You honestly can’t say there is no difference between being down 35 points at half in a home game vs being down 6 with your offense having a chance to win the game in the final minute, even if both end in a loss.

  23. Haven't seen this topic mentioned as of yet. There is a pretty gaping hole left behind by one of the best kickers to play at NU. We've always seemed to have a great kicking game; but we've been particularly spoiled with great kickers this past decade and a half. Hopefully we'll be able to find another great kicker to take over the kicking reigns. Anyone have any knowledge as to who are the players expected to compete for the job; and who is expected to have the "lead" in the competition (if there even is one)?

  24. I don't get it. More miles per gallon helps the consumer, as long as they're not paying an arm and a leg for it with the car purchase. Forcing the companies to outdo each other on the miles per gallon also helps the consumer. Removing these requirements only helps the car companies who aren't good at that. So, as usual, Trump isn't for the little guy. If Obama was for it, he's against it. If Obama was against it, he's for it. He's a simple, small-brained man.

  25. There is many reasons we get good kickers here, tradition, history of professional play, play in championship teams and so on. One that doesn't get talked about enough is that this is actually a difficult place to practice and learn kicking. The weather kickers get to practice in here rivals any NFL team. The wind is awful, the temperature can change from 100 to 30, and every single kick is under intense pressure inside our stadium of 90000. The conditions of kicking here are brutal and good kickers want to come kick here. That tradition will continue and the nations best kickers will continue to come because of the preparation for the NFL.

  27. The bolded is simply not true. The timing of it, that is. There was a meeting immediately after Obama was elected the first time that they were going to oppose everything, regardless of what it was. That's why the Democrats had no bipartisan support. Also, there were compromises in the ACA with the GOP which made it worse than what it would have been.

  28. I'm willing to switch my vote to Fisher if it means the NU DBs will finally get some consistent coaching for a couple years. Nebraska's DB coaching slot has had more turnover than a fast food restaurant.

  29. I completely understand and it's why anytime I mention that Trump is an idiot and needs to go...the first reaction instantly is still...."WHAT??? You liked Hillary???" I want to bash my head against the wall. AND....it's why I said the Democrat has to be someone who is at least reasonable. This is talking about congressional and Governor races. In 2020 when, God forbid, Trump is running again, I will NOT vote for him. Now, the Democrats will also need to earn my vote with someone reasonable. They failed miserably in that in 2016. So, I found myself not voting for either of them. I will vote for someone in 2020 that earns my vote. The Republicans would have to run someone other than Trump. The Democrats have a chance and I will listen to what they have to say. But, my vote there is far from a sure thing.

  31. II'm old enough to remember when arena full of Trump superfans (and elected Rs) howled about how buttery males would endanger nations security. This is governance by Fox News. He had dinner over Easter weekend at Mar a Lago with deranged conspiracy theorist Sean Hannity as well. Do what you will in local elections. Vote for the best candidate or whomever beat represents your view. But please, in November, don't continue to support this lunacy by voting for Republicans. They have nothing to say and only enable this nonsense. Vote blue in 2018. Help the blue wave restore some sanity.

  33. Can you believe I once put “hog-molly” in a script when I worked at a tv station, and the anchor refused to say it because it was “far too offensive”? Granted this was the same anchor who said I couldn’t say “finds a man in the flats” because “nobody knows what that means”. Translation: they didn’t know what it means.

  34. Do you feel better that Nebraska won 4 games and not 1? 4 is bad, but it could have been much worse. I don't know about you, but as a competitor, that line of thinking is anything but reassuring. When we talk about Nebraska on here, we don't get arguments of reassurance because it could have been worse. Why are we then doing it for another team? Nebraska did play with Wisconsin for quite a while last year. Actually, that first half offensive performance was one of the best ones against Wisconsin all year. Nebraska did hang with them on the scoreboard 17-17 in the 3rd quarter. These weren't the narratives for that game. It was about not stopping their running game. AGAIN. Not beating them. AGAIN. It was how Wisconsin is in our way. Riley, for all his faults, at least was competitive on the scoreboard with Wisconsin. 2015 and 2016 were one score games. How come I don't recall anyone mentioning the importance of that last year? How come Nebraska losing 6 of 7 to Wisconsin is important, but we're downplaying Wisconsin losing 9 of 10 to Ohio St. Riley was more competitive on the scoreboard in his 3 meetings with Wisconsin than they've been in their last 3 with Ohio St. Well, no matter how we describe Wisconsin against Ohio St, they are in their way. Ohio St is the biggest obstacle to them hanging conference championship banners, which they haven't done since 2012, despite their divisional success. 2012 being noteworthy in that Ohio St was ineligible for postseason play, in Urban Meyer's first year. They don't get a banner for saying, "at least we kept it closer than Nebraska". No, the narrative is Wisconsin loses to Ohio St, AGAIN. Do that 6 in a row and 9 out of 10 and see how reassuring simply not getting blown out is.

  38. Should we look at the posts from the 2015 season? Don't remember it being giddy. Frustrating is more the word I'd use. To be serious for a second: From an analytical point of view, there's a point here. Scoring margin is one of the biggest predictors in an alternate possession game. So, yes, it matters in a sense. But, if we go back to the comment that started this, it doesn't really accomplish the goal....losing 9 of 10 is still losing.

  41. I love a good Dirk bash as much as the next person. That being said, he's far and away the best columnist the OWH (and probably the state) has. His long form pieces and non Husker football related stuff is usually pretty excellent. His article about the Kansas basketball friends with one of them dying of cancer was gut wrenching, thought provoking and beautiful.

  42. Adam Carriker is living out his dream of talking Husker football while playing a wrestling character. I can't fault him for it, because he's clearly found an audience to the point where he's in multiple publications in the state with his schtick. That being said, I don't follow it, and I wish it didn't take up so much cache in the OWH that it pushes other coverage out.
