  1. More bad news for Purdue and Brohm. For Purdue: Brohm spent half time calling Louisville For Brohm: Louisville AD kept asking who he was

  3. NU is competing with conference teams for many of the same recruits. I want those conference teams to be as bad as possible, so those recruits choose NU and not NU’s opponents. As far as national perception, as long as NU wins, that will take care of the national perception. I don’t want NU to have to depend on help from their conference breathren.

  4. Honestly, I like college football, but I’m a Nebraska fan more than anything else. I just want to worry about NU’s successes before thinking about the rest of the conference. I understand the Big Ten teams have an indirect correlation to NU’s successes, but I will never “root for the conference”. The fact that the SEC teams and fans do that is one of the lamest things out there.

  6. Fully agree. I could care less about the bowl games. I dont blame the playoff- I just think it has shined a light on how worthless the bowls actually are. With kids also recognizing it some are opting out of the bowl games making them even more meaningless.

  8. As we know, the Huskers have faced challenges in returning to national prominence. But there is a trend worth watching: It is getting very hard for any cold weather team to win a national championship. In the last 15 years, only one cold weather team (Ohio State in 2014) won a national title. Every other year it was a WARM weather team: (In alphabetical order) Alabama 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 Auburn 2010 Clemson 2016 Florida 2006, 2008 Florida State 2013 LSU 2003, 2007 Southern California 2004 Texas 2005 And who’s up for this year? Warm weather Alabama and Clemson are higher seeds over cold weather Notre Dame and Oklahoma (some might argue that Oklahoma might be part of the Sun Belt). And should Notre Dame surprise and win it this year, they are a unique school with a unique special national footprint to help them along. There may be reasons in addition to weather that warm site teams are winning most everything, but the trend is undeniable. Since it is bit hard to move Lincoln further south a couple hundred miles, the Huskers need to find ways to compete with these warm weather powerhouses if national titles are ever to be found again. And maybe plant some palm trees around Lincoln.

  10. National perceptions help rankings, recruitment, and give committees NODs when choosing teams for post season games. Loving NU should mean rooting for the BIG to sweep bowl seasons. Heck, even in the regular season I want every team we play to be undefeated when it’s our turn, similar to ‘95 when we beat CU, KSU, KU and they each rolled in their bowls.

  12. The playoff is why I care about the bowls. The BIG has to be perceived as a top conference. Winning bowl games helps build the BIG brand.

  13. First-year contributors Wandale Robinson --- Lot of hype, similar to Washington coming in. I think the staff puts him out there right away to see what they got. Jamie Nance --- Speed and good WR ability. WR is definitely a position of need to replace Morgan's production. Career contributors Nick Henrich --- Great year for in-state talent, and he is at the top. Give him a year or so in the weight room. Bryce Benhart --- Didn't put him as a 1st-year contributor given his position, but an argument could easily be made. Ty Robinson --- This is the type of big-sized athlete you want on the DL. Rahmir Johnson --- Unheralded because of Wandale, but I love his running style. Really, he checks all the boxes (speed, good cuts, vision, toughness, character) Jackson Hannah --- Hit-stick, Big Ten style LB Chris Hickman --- Very athletic. Needs size. Quinton Newsome --- Outstanding film Garrett Nelson --- Motor. Someone that makes coaches put him on the field. Javin Wright --- Good size for a CB. Like physically. Good speed (long-strider, not a lot of burst) Brant Banks --- Someone you let set the strong-side edge. Ethan Piper --- Honestly, not sure whether he plays NT or OG. Athletic and could develop the size for either. Matthew Anderson --- Taking a gamble here same as the staff. Really like his frame and athleticism Jimmy Fritzche --- Same as Anderson. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Non-contributors Luke McCaffrey --- Great athlete but may get recruited over at QB. Hate to say that. Darian Chase --- Needs some development and last year did not prove to me that WR will get enough. Ronald Thompkins --- Injury history. Mosai Newsom --- Could be a sleeper but needs a lot of time to develop. If the team starts winning at a high clip, he could get recruited over. Jamin Graham --- Special teams probably. Garret Snodgrass ---- Another special teams guy. Michael Lynn --- We have three OL projects in this class. Clearly intentional by the staff, but not all projects work out. Myles Farmer --- See him similar to Newsome, but I like Newsome's film better.

  16. I think it just goes to show how important the coach is. You can have elite talent and an average coach and be average. But if you notice most teams that have an elite coach may not start out with elite talent in the early years but are still very good teams, then the elite talent comes and pairs with the elite coach and you end up with Nebraska of old, USC early 2000's, Alabama and Clemson today. So in my opinion the head coach is the building block you MUST get right. I think we have that building block in Frost.

  17. Wisconsin just pushed Miami up and down the field, winning 35-3. Miami is loaded with 4 stars and a few 5s. I don't know if Wisconsin has any 4 stars, much less any 5s. The Badgers' consistency, lack of mistakes, and solid coaching gets them a fair amount of wins every year, but one could argue the one thing keeping them from the top is their lack of 4 and 5 star talent. Hard to say, but it was nice to see the canes get bullied and wilt in a northern cold bowl game.

  19. No, they don't? So the #7, #17, and #22 ranked teams in the nation. That doesn't seem all that cupcake to me. Michigan only played one more ranked team than ND did this year, for example, and Nebraska faced the same amount of ranked teams (while our schedule was considered one of the toughest in the country). Last year Notre Dame played #2 Georgia, #10 USC, #13 Miami, #15 Michigan State, #19 Stanford and #23 North Carolina State. 2016 Notre Dame played #5 USC, #12 Stanford, #16 Virginia Tech, #20 Miami, and had Texas/Michigan State even though both schools were bad that year. 2015 Notre Dame played #2 Clemson, #3 Stanford, #14 Florida State.

  20. This thread is a little premature as we have only got through the first NSD. However, we can always have Round 2 in February. The intent here is to predict who will be meaningful contributors (e.g., starters and heavily-rotated back-ups) over their careers and who will be scout team, non-contributors, and/or transferring out. The rules are simple, you get to assign 65% of the signed recruits as "Contributors" (right now that is 15 players) and the other 35% as "Non-contributors" (8 players). Also, you can highlight only 2 players as "Day 1 Impact Players". Make these assignments however you like, but it is probably worth considering the individual recruit's potential, need at position, and position coaches' PT philosophies (e.g., rotational like at DL or no rotations like at OL). Okay, now, here is the historical context as to why I chose the set rules... Every year we pontificate about how impactful each recruit will be on the field. The truth is looking over the past decade, Nebraska has averaged 21 players in each recruiting class and only 13-14 (or 65%) of the class sees meaningful playing time in their career. There is also a lot of talk about "Day 1 starters", but again looking at the ten-year average, 2 players from each recruiting class earn significant playing time their freshman year. Those stats do not include the 2017 and 2018 classes, as I thought it was unfair to determine their career contributions as Freshman, RS Freshman, and Sophomores. Also, with the new 4 game RS rule, what is considered "first-year contributors" may differ, so as of right now, I am considering players that burn their RS in their true freshman year and provide meaningful snaps.

  22. The weather between Norman, OK and Clemson, SC is almost identical: https://weatherspark.com/compare/m/12/8229~17066/Comparison-of-the-Average-Weather-in-Norman-and-Clemson-in-December#Sections-Snow Even the weather between Norman and Birmingham isn't too much different. South Bend is quite a bit worse though. Anyways, the actual literal weather doesn't really matter very much. The perception of being rural and isolated is what matters.

  23. Outside of winning I’m curious to see how sending some more guys to the NFL will play towards future recruits. Maybe not as significantly for Nebraska given Frost’s focus on character, but it certainly doesn’t hurt the narrative that we will make you better and a possible Sunday player.

  26. If that were to be the case (I know it won't) that would be a really good draw for Nebraska if they get past Oregon. They wouldn't have to deal with a team like Duke, Gonzaga, or North Carolina

  30. There are a bunch of starters for Michigan sitting out the game including 2 team captains. Getting ready for the NFL I guess. Some of these guys are late round picks as well. The team and fan base seem very apathetic toward playing Florida again. I’d be surprised if Michigan wins. That said, I agree with Colorado Husk, the bowl games mean less and less if you are not in the 4 team play-off. With all the key players opting out of playing, it starts to feel like a warm up for next year.

  31. 2010 auburn yes. Cam was the power back. That was the peak of sec defense those years. 2009 Ohio state - under Tressel always tough physical teams. 2011 usc not sure. But from 2000 till just a few years ago usc was a bully in the pac12. The knock on Oregon nationally was they could not beat a tough physical team. Not sure why your fighting that. That has been the Oregon narrative for the last 10 years

  32. You can have the best and most perfect and lacking in weaknesses scheme in the world it's still really hard to win every single game especially ones against top 5 teams. All I'm curious about is your use of 'flame out'. What does that mean? Because losing rare, hard fought, close games to elite teams doesn't seem like it would match that term very well imo. Were 2010 Auburn, 2011 USC and 2009 Ohio State known for being physical and tough teams especially? I don't remember them as such. Stanford and LSU, sure.

  33. Not sure if this was stated but I heard Javin Wright and his dad were at Noa's in home when Frost was there. They were definitely invited which means Noa is N! But really that may give us an indication that he could be leaning toward NU at this time.

  35. It wasnt "his" team. His culture, his coaching staff etc. He just called the plays. Big difference if he was head coach and recruited how he wanted. Coached how he wanted. He was just a soldier at the time. Frost knows the error of the oregon system was not having any physicality or power element. Thus why he is attempting to blend Husker of old with Oregon speed. So I think the reason they lost is less about talent and more about lack of an emphasis on power.

  36. TG's post 3 up from this one made me think that there is literally only one issue that supposedly defines a conservative judge from a liberal one. Abortion (which, as Bert would say, is decided law). Literally every other issue conservative judges side with isn't a true conservative ideal. It gives power to the corporations and the government, and marginalizes the people (voter rights, campaign contributions, class action law suites, etc.) Those aren't conservative ideals. Maybe someone can show me where I'm missing something...

  37. There is a obvious difference between watching film from Dylan Jordan and Eugene Asante. Asante is a full-go, runner-hitter the way Chin and Frost describe their desired defensive mentality, i.e., "shoot your shot". Jordan reminds me a lot of Dedrick Young. He can follow the play but is either indecisive or hesitant in his tackling form. I guess that may not be a disqualifier if you consider the strides Young made in his play from the first to second half of the season. That may be evidence that this coaching staff can get guys to play with speed and decisiveness.

  38. I think there is a happy middle ground that Nebraska existed in when we were at our best. Hold yourself to higher standards, but at the same time always be on the look out for areas where the rules can be ethically pushed/stretched. It’s a fine line, but with strong leadership, and a healthy vision for the administration, team, & fan base it can happen.
