  1. Gopher fans thought they would have JD to go along with Bateman...now they have neither. Hate to see it.

  4. Which is why the idea that player safety is really being significantly compromised by participating in sports is pretty over-sold. It assumes that they are "safe" as long as they are not participating.

  5. Spielman I'll give you, but the culture had nothing to do with Gray leaving and I haven't seen anyone implying it was a factor for Francois either. Definitely still figuring it out though - I think many (me included) assumed he'd figured out enough at UCF to be good in the big ten right away. Going undefeated is a major achievement no matter where you do it, so I still think Frost is very good coach. But it's a whole different ball game here - the teams we play, the pressure around the program, and the situation we had. Hasn't done himself any favors with some of his one-liners either, but you could argue that's been Frost trying to set the standard rather than style with no substance. Is it all talk and no substance, or just preaching a level of competence that we haven't reached yet?

  8. This is speculation. It's not OK to make medical assessments based on a photo, or that we can state that he was "obviously overweight" or that he is an "outlier." Is 6'4" and 325 pounds as a freshman obvious signs of poor medical health, and/or an outlier for D1 linemen?

  9. Strength & conditioning under Bo was actually pretty good. I'm choosing the words "pretty good" carefully - so, not "great" but also not "bad." Then Riley not only didn't bring in quality linemen on both sides of the ball but practically abandoned serious weight training, at least as far as I understand it. Outside of Ohio State's insane evolution to a completely other level, the rest of the decent-good teams (outside of Indiana) still play power football on both sides of the ball. In our division, Wisconsin & Iowa consistently develop strong offensive linemen, defensive linemen, and linebackers. Until we get our big guys strong again - really big & strong - we will continue to suck in the B1G. This is foundational, and it doesn't get fixed in just two seasons.

  10. He still is a pro athlete. I agree, the Eduardo Rodriguez case is concerning. However should we stop a sport based on rare cases? If you say yes, consider this - There have been 30 heat-related college football player deaths from 2000 to 2018 according to the American Council on Science and Health. https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/boy-14-collapses-and-dies-after-overheating-at-football-practice/328874#:~:text=According to the Center for,Council on Science and Health. There were many more cases through youth and high school football and even more in other sports. Should we stop all workouts and games anytime the temperature reaches a certain point?

What is a "gleaming" example of a college student-athlete in danger? 4. In your expert medical opinion, based on your medical training in epidemiology and infectious disease specialization, what are those mild symptoms that will not turn into sequelae. 5. What is it going to take to convince you that this is a serious situation for college student-athletes?

  13. This season is going to be like the 2018 Akron game. We're getting closer and closer to kickoff but we can see the storm on the horizon. They may actually have a kickoff, but the games are going to be called and we'll all just be left sitting around wanting football. Feels bad, man.

  14. He's a troll, man. A smart one, but a troll nonetheless. Most post in here is devised to rile folks up. It's best to not get too worked up about it. On a broader level a lot of politics has devolved into a perpetual game of gotchas and dunking on people and it's pretty mindless and sad.

Thought this would interest you. I came upon another patio jam packed with the unmasked. It turns out someone was paying us a visit.

  16. I doubt that not playing football will protect any more people than if a full season is played. BUT at least then the casualties cannot be blamed on teams, colleges, conferences that are only out to maintain revenue. That’s a big BUT imo. The optics of it will shape perception and that’s all that really matters at the end of the day. Even if there’s only one or two cases as bad as that kids, I don’t see how it can be justified. It’s just a sport....that I am going to miss watching terribly.

  18. This is pretty interesting. Good on them for trying to scale back social contact, somehow. Should help. Still, if the MLB is indication, the bigger problem is what happens outside of organized team activities. And there's just only so much teams or conferences can control in that regard.

Did they make a mistake in hiring BC, yes, should they have fired BC, actually maybe not, did they make a mistake in hiring Bo, no, did they make a mistake in firing him, yes. Did they make a mistake in hiring Riley, yes, did they make a mistake in firing him, no. Now, if you read that would you please venmo me 3 dollars.

  21. My sister who just beat breast cancer a few months ago also just beat Covid. Said it was like having a bad cold. Both of my parents who are in their late 70's also just got over Covid. I was around all 3 of them and didn't get it. Nobody know anything about anything. It's a crab shoot. Kinda like getting in your car everyday. You gonna get in an accident? who knows? Let them play.

  22. The support staff and faculty can wear PPE. These kids are already the leading age group getting and passing the virus along so their families are at risk regardless of football. Whether we have football or not, many of these kids are going to get the virus. At least with football their life will have some structure and they will be motivated to stay covid free. I can tell you the average kid in america right now isn't afraid of this.

Do you think you are getting under everyone's skin? Do you think you are "owning" people here? Most rational posters in the P&R forum have written your posts off as opinions not worth listening to. Are you seriously entertained by strangers thinking your an idiot? I really don't get it.

  27. Is this really your take on this? I find it hard to believe. There are many things much more important than college sports. I would like them to be able to play as much as anyone but if not playing prevents only a handful of cases like the one that mother described, I’m okay with that. You are right as far as it’s very likely not that dangerous for the vast majority but I can guarantee you this one kid will not be the only one to get hit hard by it. And your point about him not appearing to be in the best shape totally ignores that there are hundreds, thousands more players that are also not in prime shape. Do we just write them off, not do all that is possible to help prevent another 10 or 20 or how ever many more cases like his? You might need to modify your life perspective.

  28. It does raise it. But there are also more protections in place (testing, monitoring, advising, etc.). And there would be a significant increase in "free time" without sports that could also be an increase risk as well. Like I said, it's not nothing but the idea that player safety is being compromised is significantly over-sold.

  30. Some more info: It would make sense that this was caused by more than just fireworks. You can see fireworks going off near the blast site before the big explosion, so there likely were some there. But dang - that big blast didn't look like pyrotechnics. It looked serious.

  35. I know I'm a negative Nancy, but I'm not sure that the internal workings of Nebraska football are as in sync as the article portrays. The high profile departure of JD Spielman and of Gray and Francios to a lesser extent suggest that there is still some culture issues with current recruits and players. Along with the staff shakeup of replacing the OC, Frost is still in "trying to figure it out" mode in my opinion.

  38. ^ whitesplaining It’s part of black culture. You can’t strip everything away from all cultures until you are left with things that are fine in every culture. You’re taking away a lot from a lot of people, then.

  39. It's why I always cringe when I hear people in Nebraska complain about government and how they "all need to go!". Then proceed to elect the same people over and over again. It is complete fantasy, but I'd love for every single Rep and Sen seat to be up for grabs. Have new people sign up for Repub and Dem primaries. But in a twist of logic: have registered Dems vote in the GOP primary, and have GOP voters vote in Dem primary. It's just a silly thought experiment, but I would imagine our representation in govt would be much easier to stomach.

  41. Height is important in WR spots (actually all the pass catcher positions) but they need to be sble to run fast and precise routes and recognize the open areas as well. Good hands are essential. Blocking intensity is critical. This is where the size may help the most.
