  1. -TE felony arrest -lets casey thompson walk -couldn't beat a below average minnesota team. -loses our best linebacker in a transfer to michigan -makes an 8-25 QB our starter -says grant has fumbling issues. puts grant in when all we needed to do was not fumble -couldn't find 1 go to receiver to throw to. i'm probably missing some other stuff, but you get the idea.

  2. Not sure how much change people were expecting in one game. I thought the defense and special teams showed some good things. The offense was a struggle, but so was last year if NU wasn’t hitting deep passes to Palmer. The change and improvement is a process, not a snap of the fingers.

  3. Nebraska is probably slightly better defensively than 2022 which is good. Minnesota has good receivers, probably the best in the B1G West and we took away the running game completely. They'll keep us in games. On offense, the team is signifactly worse. With no Palmer to bail them out and a lack of other receivers and a QB that seems to struggle in the passing game, Nebraska will like be a less dynamic and more turnover prone offense than 2022. It's hard to overstate how bad the offense was tonight, especially the pass game. It was brutal outside of the broken play. The run game at RB is below average, and the only reliable offense is QB runs. We're essentially the 2021 AMart offense but much worse.

  9. I don’t post often, but I felt like I needed to share my take on Sims and the offensive woes last night… 1. We have the worst receiving core in the conference BY FAR. Might sound like an excuse for Sims, but I didn’t see any receivers getting any separation for the most part. That on top of an oline that can’t protect and QB who’s known to make risky decisions, don’t add up to success. 2. We didn’t hand the ball off to Ervin enough. Even if you take away his one big run, he was still averaging 4.7 yards a carry. FEED HIM! (While I’m a “younger” fan, I’m still a RTDB guy.) 3. Give Sims simpler passing plays like quick RPO’s, screens, and let him work outside of the pocket on rollouts. Our best passing plays came on short routes with the 2 minute offense or when we lined up in heavier formations and used play action. So again, hand the ball off more and then use similar looking plays in the passing game. Overall take: We looked like a tougher team. We didn’t get pushed around like we have in the past by Minnesota. Last year the Gophers won by ramming the ball down the Blackshirts’ throats. We’re prepared to fight in the trenches, unless we’re throwing the ball. I think a lot of last nights mistakes can be fixed and we can continue to become a decent team by the year’s end. My guess is 5-7 or 6-6 still. #GBR

  13. In my week 1 overreaction I think the defense appears to have improved considerably. They were considerably more stout in the run game then they've been in recent years. I also think that Sims is the answer and the liability all at once. The dude can ball out but he definitely needs to be safer with the ball. The OL is still terrible and until that improves, we're going to see QBs make bone headed plays because he can't get comfortable. All in all I think I'm more optimistic then a lot of fans this morning. We all knew the offense was going to struggle early in the season, and we HOPED the defense would be able to keep games close. We know that Rhule wants to grind out wins and he damn near did last night, in his first game at NU, on the road against a program that has won a lot of games in recent years. This is a process and I think we are heading in the right direction.

  14. What do the fans have to do with this? Husker fans have been enduring this BS for 20 damn years and still spending their money and showing up for games for a program that quite frankly doesnt deserve to have any fans at all. Any other school would be playing in front of only their family and friends if they played like Nebraska has for 20 years. The fans are great and we have every right to be upset. This game was lost because of coaching. Terrible clock management. Terrible situational coaching. Playing players in crunch time that two weeks ago you publically called out. Not using a TO at the end of the first half on the half yard line which resulted in rushing to the line and getting a false start penalty. Three straight incomplete passes with the lead in the fourth quarter when the running game has started to open up. Trotting Sims out there at all, etc. Its time for the sellout streak to end and for this program to get the fan support they deserve.

  15. #1 Husker fans are the worst. It's game one of the first season. Defense did pretty well, and they've been a huge liability for the last 5 to 10 years. #2 Rhule & Co are absolute fools for letting Casey go, and even more foolish for thinking Sims was some kind of answer. You have a decent passer back there tonight and this game is 35 to 3 or 42 to 10

  16. On the play that tied the score at 10 all, the left tackle had a huge jump before the snap. So obvious -- how did they miss that ?

  17. The refs aren't out to get Nebraska, or any B1G team, or any team at all. They are human, and make mistakes. Guess what? So do you. All fans dislike the refs, and no they didn't cause us to lose the game, the team and coaches did that. Get over it. These arguments make you sound dumber than you are.

  18. What I learned. That was the first time Nebraska actually looked like a B1G team IMO. Defense was improved. They tackled better, hit with bad intentions and swarmed to the ball. They should be good enough to keep us in all conference games except for probably Michigan. Unfortunately the offense also looked like a B1G West team, ala Minnesota or Iowa. Of course you should win games like that but 4 turnovers will do that to ya. Hoping Sims can improve on his decision making and field vision but not counting on it. Sadly I think we will be one dimensional yet again with our only real threat being the QBs legs. Lord knows the OL isn’t going to magically transform but hoping they can at least improve some. Special teams didn’t look like special needs for the first time in a long time. I like that we’re not going to raise the white surrender flag on kick and punt returns. And both kickers looked good. Apparently I’m in the minority but I, for the most part, liked what I saw. I don’t blame Rhule for going for the TD at the end of the first half. Yeah, in hindsight, people will question it but when you’ve been where this program has been for the last ten year, f#&% it, go for it. Just please do it better next time. The only coaching decision I had an issue with was going with butterfingers the RB when he fumbled. Sorry but he wouldn’t see the field on my team unless we were up by 21. B1G officiating is still lousy and seemingly biased against the Huskers. Not blaming the loss on it but 1) we did score a TD that they didn’t get right on review. 2) Minn did hold us quite a few times without a flag. 3) we still might be the only team in the conference to be called for disconcerting signals, again. 4) Minn had a couple false starts that were not flagged…they seemed to catch all of ours. There was only one call that went our way when they missed that PI. It is what it is. We have to play better to overcome that BS.

  21. I guess I'll be the dissenter in this thread too. Based on simply the play calls, I thought it was fine. Before the fire drill at the end of first half, that was a TD. On the FG drive, the play called dead on the false start, from about the 5 yard line, looked good to score or at least get them down to the 1. Then that early fourth quarter sequence,, I've seen some complain about, was there. Somehow the big strong QB limp wristed the pass. Next play, receiver wide open in the middle and pass gets tipped. Now depending on if Satterfield was responsible for the following, his GPA drops for me. The end of half fire drill was completely unnecessary. 30 seconds left, inside the 1, 1 timeout. Couldn't understand why the TO wasn't used there. Settle everyone down. Run the Jalen Hurts QB sneak for 6. Leave 20 seconds on the clock for UMs inept offense. If by some miracle Sims gets stopped, next play was already called during timeout (run it again or spike to stop clock). Understanding the capabilities of the personnel. If there was indicators of Sim's passing being that bad, then yes, needed to call better situation plays (I doubt he/staff thought Sims would be THAT poor). Then of course the idea of having a known fumbler in a crucial part of the game was a major miss. All in all, I thought player mistakes at crucial times were more the culprit on offense than the play calling.

  22. Honestly, I don't feel like I learned much - the game played out about the way I thought it would. I expected both teams to be better on defense than offense, resulting in a low-scoring slugfest. Problem is, that's pretty much Fleck's favorite kind of game. Minnesota doesn't have Ibrahim anymore and it shows. Some people were talking up their WRs, and one did make a few plays, but that's about it. They're not gonna scare anyone with their offense this year. Their defense, on the other hand, is still the strength of their team. Sims is what I expected - talented but mistake-prone. But he wasn't getting a whole lot of help from his WRs, which I think is going to be the bigger problem this year. Grant's got legs, but still shouldn't be seeing the field much. I still like the hire of White more than Satterfield, though we haven't seen how the defense will hold up against an offense with a pulse. Overall, folks, remember that this was the first game of the season, and Minnesota was #4 in scoring defense and #9 in total defense last year. There's definitely gonna be some squeaky wheels on the team, but the offense isn't going to look this weak overall in most games. Bring on Deion!

  23. Offense: I have real concerns about this unit. I wonder what they are even going to be able to do. Sims was the entire offense and also a huge liability. There was little push from the line and receivers were not open. Defense: Overall I thought they played well. They swarmed to the ball and made good tackles. They controlled the line of scrimmage on the run. I think there is some talent on the D. They never really got much of a pass rush going until the end of the game. That's going to be a problem if it doesn't get corrected. Coverage looked soft at times, but I think they will improve. Special Teams: First time in a while I can say "They didn't hurt us". I was please with their performance. Several Huge Plays doomed this team: Penalty on the goal line Gabe's TD that wasn't a TD The pick thrown in the endzone Robinson's personal foul Grant Fumble (This was the worst in my opinion) The pick at the end of the game Gopher impossible catch on 4th Down You just can't make this many mistakes and expect to win.

  24. The coaching staff had to make the choice they made. Scott Frost also figured out that with the line quality and his inability to recruit and develop receivers, the only way to move the ball was to run the QB. Our staff is smart - they quickly realized this. With very little talent at receiver and a running back room that is mostly average, they got the best dual-threat they could get from the portal and they're going to try and win with his skillset. I agree with OP - the staff wants to develop a certain pro-style foundation which I understand. However it's evident that this just isn't Jeff Sims skillset. They probably need to limit the receiver route trees, simplify the RPO reads, and roll the pocket a bit more. I know this might run counter to the developmental process for the physical, pro-style offense they want to run. But it's pretty obvious that Sims doesn't see the field (and the OL doesn't protect) well enough to be a pocket passer. We're simply going to have to Iowa our way to 6 wins - grind out games, punt, let the defense keep us in games. Try to be risk averse on offense and see what happens.

  25. So apparently Rhule's track record of starting slow the first year and building a double digit winner by year 3 doesn't matter because in his first game, which was a conference game, and an away game against a team that has won 9,9, 11, & 7 in the last four full seasons, the team was in position and win and gave the game away. Dude nobody in their right mind expected us to win last night. Everyone knew the offense was going to struggle. The defense was solid last night, and the team as a whole was more physical and looked more "Nebraska" then they have in some time. Take a breath, step back, and remember that this is a legit rebuild. Like the old saying goes "Rome wasn't built in a day"

  28. B1G refs aren't biased against Nebraska. B1G refs are just bad against both teams, you just remember the calls that go against Nebraska. A play or 2 before the Minny TD, there was a probably pass interference as well as a roughing the passer which was missed.

  30. Not a fair comparison, Martinez was a much, much better thrower. What we saw last night was a guy who didn't see the field. Martinez was an average passer, what we saw last night was a passing game that was a detriment to the team. Throws more than 3 yards past the line of scrimmage had a 30% chance of being intercepted. It was so bad you have to wonder if they need to greatly simplify the offense and route trees ran by the receivers.

  33. It wasn't even really forced it was just a terrible throw off his back foot. You put air under that ball and aim for the pylon, not zip it into double coverage. It was also a poor choice, because the tight end was open just inside the goal line with the nearest defender a couple yards away, easy pitch and catch for the TD.

  35. Reckless. Sims was reckless with decision making on many of his throws, particularly on his INT's. Grant was reckless with ball security on his fumble. Rhule was reckless for putting Sims in so many dropbacks and for putting in Grant when ball security was the #1 priority while tied, late in the 4th (Rhule was aware of Sims' turnover history at GATech and Grant's problems in practice).

  36. Yeah trying too hard. Coach basically benched Grant because of Fumbles then puts him in during a crucial time. Rhule makes a lot of money. He deserves blame for this one.

  37. THOUGHTS ON THE GAME: Defense played their hearts out, and it was so refreshing to see blitzes called when they should be. Special teams played very well, and they were physical. There were positives, but also familiar negatives. I'm sorry for the young man, but Anthony Grant needs to move down the depth chart. If he was having fumbling issues in training camp he should not have been in the game during that critical situation. (That's on the coaches). This game came down to Turnover Margin & Game Management. BIGGEST CONCERNS: Nebraska's only touchdown came off a trick play. Nebraska's best rushing offense was from our QB. (This is NOT sustainable for a full season). A QB run game is fine in managible doses, but if we can't get a normal running game going with our O-Line and running backs it's going to be a long year. FINAL THOUGHTS: When you lose six straight seasons it will take time and a lot of coaching to fix it. THIS. WILL. TAKE. TIME. Matt Rhule does need to sit down with Satterfield before the Coloroado game to re-evaluate the offense and especially the play calling from the 2nd half.

  41. -Corcoran got beat like a drum. -Satterfield... So many questions. What happened to TEs? Why did you throw on the first drive in the fourth? And why did you put an RB with fumble issues in on a key drive. -Why didn't Ervin carry more?

  43. Minnesota showed themselves to be the doormat of the Big Ten West last night. Huskers didn’t lose that game — we GAVE IT AWAY. Good coaches win in Year 1. Happens every season. Rhule had better get back to that portal and find himself a QB or else our team is FUBAR’D this season.

  44. Wow a coach takes over the only P5 program to not make a bowl in the last 5 years. A program that has won 4 and 3 games the last 2 years and hasn’t had a winning season since 2016 and there’s gonna be some initial struggles? How surprising there is no presreason in CFB and yet again we have to open with a tough conference game on the road. A lot of the mishaps yesterday screamed growing pains. Perhaps Trev and our department should focus less on “early season spotlight” games and rather give us 4 home games against easier competition to transition into the season better. Seems to work just fine for Michigan and would go along way in avoiding irrational commentary from fans such as yourself
