  1. "Benefits from an offense that is predicated on simplified reads. Offense able to create wide-open receivers after busted coverages at times. Needs to improve resetting feet when maneuvering pocket to improve accuracy and power. Tends to "see" pass rush too often. Will drop eyes and look to escape pocket rather than stepping to available pocket space. Frequent trips outside pocket increase opportunity for injury. Pocket feel is very average. Stepped into sacks he had no business taking. Didn't have to throw to tight windows often. Average processor on field. Still learning when to get rid of the ball and move to next play. Slow to make anticipatory throws and can improve patience in allowing combo routes to mature rather than rushing the read. Missed obvious pre-snap blitzes. Drive accuracy needs work. When cutting it loose, ball tends to sail on him a bit. Arm strength is adequate but inconsistent to field side. Needs to bring hips through throws to increase zip into tight windows in NFL. Fumbled 27 times during his career." This is the "Weakness" aspect of Marcus Mariota's Draft Profile.

  7. For future reference. Look out for Xplosive Edge to become a huge advantage for our local recruits, scholarship or walk-on. You might start seeing 10-20 guys per year working out there to be ready as soon as they step on campus.

Good coaches know how to build a culture/system, ID & recruit the right talent to make the system work and ultimately succeed with that system.

They also know how to adapt their system to fit the talent they currently have available and still succeed.

Frost has shown he can do the former. He's got a lot to prove regarding the latter.

    4. NoLongerN

      NoLongerN

Sadly, the phrase by Coach Frost, "We all know where this is going", isn't going to hold any weight going forward.  Time to "put up or shut up."  I'm with @Vince R. feelings.  Unfortunately, there is no momentum at all.  We should all probably be grateful we hold on to the 4 star commits we have.  Outside of landing Manning and Johnson, there really isn't a potential recruit that I salivate in bringing into the program ... my spirit says, "meow" to most.  I guess that is what it should feel like after 5-7.  Can't imagine how those of you feel who thought we would be better than 7-5.  You have to feel really sick to your stomach.

@B.B. Hemingway Appreciate the perspective. I don't think we're really that far off opinion-wise - it's really the difference of how we perceive his early years because we probably both agree what he did his senior season, and his transformation, was outstanding. Much of the scouting analysis on him in recent weeks is sort of along this same vein i.e. there wasn't much too write home about prior to what happened in 2018. Again, a lot of factors played into that, but that's why I bring it up.

    3. B.B. Hemingway

      B.B. Hemingway

d@Enhance Are you of the opinion that he could stick in the NFL? Though I always liked his potential at Nebraska, I'll admit that I never entertained the idea of him being a productive NFL back. I'll be real interested to see what he does at the next level, and I think he's got a chance. As you said, prior to his senior season, I don't think any of us could have imagined that.

    4. Enhance

      Enhance

I think he has as good a chance as any. The scouts seem to like most of what he brings to the table. The biggest knocks I've seen are his explosion after cuts and lateral quickness in pass pro. Otherwise, he seems to be drawing a lot of praise. He probably wouldn't fit across all 32 teams (a lot of NFL running back prospects don't) so it'll probably come down to the opportunity.

  12. I am so proud to be a Nebraska fan. Nebraska always stuck it’s neck out to be different. They always strived to get in front and be innovative. I’m proud of our coaches, players, and administration for taking their stance and to do it so boldly. Go Big Red.

Getting walk on commits doesn’t  preclude getting scholarship players. Just be glad they want to come to NU vs taking a scholarship at a D2.

Walkons probably see a lot of opportunities for playing time.  I would if I was a motivated PWO.

  14. I had this thought the other day in terms of recruiting. I can see somewhere in the future where universities will set up recruiting offices in different states. I haven't looked into the rules, but I can certainly see it happening. I think about how crazy it would be to see a building with a big red N on it here in LA.

With marketing and advertising agencies getting involved, the next move has to be expansion.

Sorry mods, I put this in another thread but I felt this was a better place.

    1. Toe

      Toe

Interesting thought, at least. But I don't know about full-time employees with their own offices. If there's anything remote to be done, though, I think it would be more like third-party scouting firms. Pay someone who already lives in LA a commission to comb through hours of video and visit various HS teams in the area and give their picks to various client coaches based on what the coaches are looking for. But who knows...

    2. JJ Husker

      JJ Husker

Probably right. And I see a time somewhere in the future where I won’t give two rips about college football because it has become too much like the NFL and no longer resembles the sport I grew up loving. The transfer portal and the lack of player commitment to anything except me me me is a pretty good start down that road.

  15. I have been watching a ton of tape over the last few months. I think calling Nebraska's D horrible or abysmal is a gross overstatement, and it doesn't really explain why we lost 8 games. Despite not having a true nose, good safeties, and starting the best catch tackler/ most underwhelming 4 year starter in Nebraska history (D.Young); they didn't get a ton of help from the Offense when it mattered. Our Offense was so boom or bust, but mostly bust. There are so many quarters where the Offense did not put up points. If Nebraska is able to just eliminate scoreless halves and quarters, it changes everything. Let alone a decent jump on D would make Nebraska more than formidable. They could contend for the conference rather easily.

      Vince R.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the D was good by any stretch, but I see plenty of moments where they held their own, and Nebraska's O let them down. You can see it all over the Wisconsin game.

    3. Mavric

      Mavric

Pretty much agree @Vince R..  I would say the other thing to keep in mind was there was not only decent improvement as the season went along but we made significant improvements from the prior year.  Granted, it was going from horrendous to kind of bad but that's significant progress in the right direction.  If we make another decent jump like that we'll be in pretty good shape for this year.

    4. Danimal

      Danimal

Big thing is improving on 3rd-downs, so many times we had two good plays then blew it on 3rd-and long. Being able to field a bigger/stronger  legit 3-4 d-line that can rotate should help a lot. Should be able to rotate at LB more too. Pro day showed how slow our safeties were, losing experience but gaining athleticism.  Corner developed considerably over the course of last season. Not expecting big things but we should give up one less score a game and force some turnovers.

  16. I have spent a lot of time watching tape of the 2018 recruiting class, and they have become my favorite class in a long time. I think the ceiling is very high for this class. There is a lot of NFL talent and the "developmental players" could be ready a year after. The Juco players all look like impact players and guys who will contribute immensely. Watch out for those DE's and Watt will not redshirt. Woodyard, Jones, and Washington will change that offense come June. Cam Taylor will come in and compete right away and possibly be a two way player who makes a name on Special Teams as well. The talent infusion this summer will be awesome to watch.

I know it's the lifeblood of the program and it's important to have the emphasis on recruiting, but I tend to not follow recruiting until late in the process for 2 reasons.

      1.  Tracking every comment of a 17-18 year old kid seems a bit odd to me.

      2.  The way recruiting is followed so closely, fans are able to get a lot of info on incoming players, but I also think it creates unrealistic expectations for kids to produce right away and get labeled as "busts" too soon in the process.

  19. I will never understand the lack of respect Ozigbo gets. He has plenty of ability to be successful and could get 1,300 easily if he has a competent Oline. He was also a bright spot on the roster last year.

@Pedro Guerrero Sorry man, but stats don’t tell half the story here. Wisconsin pumps out 2,000 yard rushers every year. Their running backs aren’t special. Good but not special. There is plenty of evidence to support that. Ozigbo played very well in a limited roll. He could have really good numbers behind a really good line

    3. ZRod

      ZRod

Idk... It just seemed to me every time he came into a game there was a burst of energy in the offense.

    4. Pedro Guerrero

What a player does in the NFL has nothing to do with whether or not they were/are a special player in College.  That is something I figured every Nebraska fan knew.

0 freshman in the history of College football had more yards rushing in a single season than Jonathan Taylor.

  20. If Nebraska can lead the nation in early enrollees somehow, I think they can bridge the gap a little bit. Accelerated development may be a tiny advantage that they can capitalize on.

  21. If we thought the roster turnover was something this year, after the season, it is going to be a complete overhaul.

Lots of reading comprehension fails in this status. I never said I don't think it happens. Hell I think the story is likely true. All I'm saying is people shouldn't be passing on these stories unless they can actually prove it and, if they can, then they should be passing it on to the proper authorities and not just nonchalantly damaging the reputation of a player, coach or school based on less than credible information.

Henderson told Rivals.com Midwest Recruiting Expert Josh Helmholdt that, "We still have all due respect for Minnesota and the coaching staff. The recruits there are still like my brothers, but this was something we both decided would be best for me and them going forward. They will definitely still be an option for me. They’re just trying to see how this senior year goes grade-wise.”

If jd leaves early, I can see it. I don’t think darion has had a productive enough career to this point to be drafted. Jaimes will be a 4 year guy. Mo Barry has to make a decent sized jump to get drafted. Now if Nebraska is in Indy, this might all change. Being relevant helps a ton.

Mo Barry is getting drafted.  As the heart of our defense if he doesn’t get drafted that will mean we had another bad year.  Don’t see that happening.
