  2. One thing I'll say for Mickey Joseph is that he has brilliantly transitioned the many fans distraught about firing Scott Frost. They realized Mickey was also a former Nebraska quarterback and are thus ready to give him every benefit of the doubt. Or just straight up give him the job. The old "one of us" argument. It has really brought the Frost second-guessing down to near zero and filled the stands again. It's tempting to anoint Joseph under the circumstances, but the team really isn't playing much better than last year's team, maybe just a tick better than the first three games. I'm not yet sure Mickey's team would have beaten Georgia Southern, either. He still has five games to show a combination of passion and discipline with his current players that would translate to what would likely be an improved recruiting pipeline. I'm open minded, but at some point (this Saturday) I'd like something more than hope. According to my research, 100% of us agree that change needs to start with the offensive line. Defensive line would be nice, too. Any coach who makes it a priority will win more games.

  3. Credit to @Cdog923 for this excellent topic idea. The name at the top of this list is….. Deion Sanders Has not demonstrated the ability to lead a P5 program like Nebraska. Sure he’s doing wonderful things at HBCU JSU but it takes more for recruiting here and sorry but Snoop Dog and Rick Ross mentions won’t move the needle in Nebraska. Maybe if he gets the Kardashians in the entourage

  11. Precisely. I'm glad we then agree that it's ultimately irrelevant. You're way too caught up in stuff that doesn't actually translate to winning football games on Saturdays in the Power 5. Virtually every Deion conversation in this thread had devolved into two paths - his recruiting and his celebrity. I think he may be a better recruiter than most off the rip, so that part I can potentially get behind even though it's no guarantee. But his celebrity or "national brand lift and exposure" isn't going to mean a thing come spring ball and fall camp. It's not going to mean a thing if they're getting truck sticked by Michigan in November. Prove it in the fall and then yeah... bring Snoop into the locker room. Go on 60 minutes. Hell, have GMA sit in his bathroom while he has a morning deuce. But, don't try to sell us on it having anything substantive to do with actually making a Nebraska a winner again. In the long list of things that Nebraska needs to win, having a coach that can get Cheech and Chong in the locker room after a game is pretty far down the list. Maybe even below Excel proficiency.

  12. In spite of his high school success we should not hire this guy.

  13. I'm not sure you can fairly compare this year to last year. A lot of good players are gone and have been replaced by transfers. Some with success, some not so much. And with the atrocious play we've seen from the OL and defense in general I'm not sure anybody could make a meaningful difference, especially only through 4 games. It's a tough situation from both Mickey and Trev. I think Mikey could be an outstanding coach but it wouldn't show with what he has inherited. And tough for Trev to really make a meaningful evaluation for the same reason. Mickey has shown areas where he excels like keeping the team together, team unity and playing hard. But is that enough since being the HC of B1G program entails a lot more which we don't really know how Mickey will handle. I'm glad it's Trev's call and not mine. One thought is Mickey might be better served in a roll like asst. HC or the like. If he does become HC he will inevitably lose a lot close, personal relationships he has with the kids since the father figure type coach and being in a CEO position don't really mesh well when your at a high profile, P5 school.

  15. But what are the recruiting experts saying?

  16. While I do agree with you, it's an asset that quickly becomes less relevant as soon you lose and lose consistently, and that's why I don't put much stock into it from a hiring standpoint. It's valuable, but, you could bank on perhaps one guaranteed off-season of value, but after a 5-7 season or even a few seasons of mediocrity... far fewer people are going to care. Saban's press runs and movie appearances were a result of winning. DS' recent media frenzy is a result of him being a HoF player in tandem with his Jackson State success - if it wasn't somebody with the celebrity of DS, far fewer people would care about Jackson State's football coach/program. So yeah, the publicity and connections are great, but at this point in my 30+ years of Husker fandom... it just doesn't resonate very deeply. I'm kind of done with the off-season championships and hype before the results. That should be fairly far down the DS resumé and reasons why you'd hire him at Nebraska... probably parked right next to 'proficient with Excel.'

  17. I’ll drink the cool aid with you! I’m curious to see what MJ would do with this team with a full off-season under his belt. Does he have what it takes to be the permanent HC? I’m not 100% convinced yet but there’s still games to be played. Right now there are definitely a few coaches I would take over MJ. #1. Luke Fickell. He’s proven he can lead a team to the playoffs, even though they got walloped by ‘Bama. Now, “Does he want to come here?”, is a legitimate question. Make him say no to us (which is probably more than likely as I’ve gathered he doesn’t seem to want to leave the state of Ohio). #2. Mike Gundy. Gundy has proven he can consistently get his teams to play at a high level while being at the “second fiddle” program in Oklahoma. He only has 1 losing season (his first) and 7 ten win seasons in 18 so far with the Cowboys. I’d be intrigued to see what he could do in Lincoln with our resources. Legitimate concerns would be can he recruit elite level talent to Lincoln? Are our resources really that much better than Okie State’s? Also, he hasn’t yet proven he can crack through to the playoffs, but he’s been “close”. Lastly, would he consider leaving his alma mater for NU? I don’t know, but I think it could be more likely than Fickell leaving Cincy for NU (no source, just my gut). #3. Chris Petersen. I like what he did at Boise State and he certainly seemed to have things rolling smoothly in Washington before burning out in 2019. If the rumors are true and there’s actually mutual interest this would be a hire that would make me happy. My concerns would be does he suffer from burnout again after a few seasons and would what he accomplished on the west coast translate to the B1G? It may be valuable to have a coach who knows how to beat USC & UCLA. #4/5. Matt Rhule or Mickey Joseph? If the top three say no I would really have to debate between offering Rhule or just keeping Joseph. I like Rhule’s approach to building a roster and think he could probably build a competent program here at Nebraska. The thing is he hasn’t stayed anywhere long enough for me to feel 100% confident in the hire. I’m putting Rhule ahead of MJ for now, but if Joseph gets us to six wins I say roll with Joseph (unless one of the top three say yes). There’s plenty of decent coaches with varying degrees of success in the rest of the field. There’s probably a few who would be interested and could build decent teams and get us those 9 win seasons like Pelini did. A lot of those coaches are only in their first or second season at their current school and haven’t proven sustained success at the P5 level yet (Aranda/Kiffin/Klieman/Leipold/DeBoer/Lanning) or have plateaued and may be slowly falling (Campbell?). Others have had good seasons but I don’t think they would bring anything particularly special to the table as far as recruiting goes (Clawson/Doeren/Malzahn/Stoops). Would any of these coaches fare any better in our current situation than Mickey Joseph has? If any of them were thrust into the HC position before the Oklahoma game how would they perform with our roster? I really don’t know. That’s why I’m willing to give MJ a shot next year ahead of most of these guys (at least right now I am). Of course if the rest of the season goes to complete crap I can easily change my mind. I want MJ and the Huskers to succeed but understand it’s a daunting task. It would be a daunting task for anyone, it seems. I’m legitimately curious to see what MJ could do next season as the HC. If it appears it’s not going to work next season, and we have to go through this again, some of those other coaches will have another year of data to go on so Alberts can make an even more informed evaluation. Do we risk that and give the less experienced Mickey Joseph the reigns? Right now, I’m willing to drink a couple cool-aids and see what happens. Time will tell. Go Big Red!!!

  18. Better make your case now for mj. The next five weeks are going to be rough. If he didn't win any more games, you still think he is the guy? 1 more win? 2? I personally would need to see a significant turnaround in on field performance before I would even state that he should be in the running. 6 wins would be the benchmark imo. I like what he says but talk is cheap. He needs to win football games against arguably the weakest west competition nebraska has ever faced.

  23. To the bold, could be? Maybe? To some little degree? I look at Mickey Joseph and see a man that can be hands on with players and assistant coaches 24/7 during the week, but when game day comes, he allows them all to do their job. Every coach wants excellence and to win, just like MJ and all coaches in the business. But, after you have been prepared during the week and gotten the reps in practice, it's time for the players to play the game. He doesn't come across like a former player that is now the head coach. He comes across like a great CEO leading the way, allowing his staff to do their jobs, and the boots on the ground (players) to carry out the mission. The end result hasn't worked to perfection just yet, but it is the plan and the foundation for the football program. And at the same time, any player on the team - from starter to 4th string walk-on - can easily approach the HC at any time and have a real convo for football goals or non-related football life problems. If you want a HC that is CEO, face of the franchise, recruits like a mofo, helps the players, listens to the staff and puts it all together in motion from sun up to sun down, gives credit and takes the blame like a man, this is your guy. Has nothing to do with being a former player, or former QB. You grow as life changes to be something you can be, not what you used to be.

  26. I think Deion is targeting Power 5 schools in the south. The Georgia Tech opening could be an interesting one. Deion was a stud player in Atlanta, and is still probably plenty popular down there. Plus, Deion can change his recruiting message from "I want to get top recruits to come to a HBCU" to "I want to get top recruits to come to one of the premier academic institutions in the South".

  27. No, we don't agree. By your logic, every positive about a coach is ultimately irrelevant if they don't win. So I guess we should shut this thread down then? That's not true at all. There have been tons of posts by me and several other posters about cultural fit, leader of young men, person of great character, win percentage, work ethic, etc. In fact, very few have been about Deion's celebrity and most of those are people saying things like anyone who likes Deion just likes him because of his celebrity. Sorry, but you're just seeing what you want to see here. Again, if you don't see the value in marketing, promotions, publicity, etc. in today's game, I don't know what to tell you. If everyone in the Nebraska AD thinks that way, no wonder we've sucked for so long. Is it the main ingredient to being successful? No. Does it have value? Hell yes. Your mental gymnastics to try to discredit Deion as a solid candidate are pretty amazing. Most of the football "experts" in American seem to disagree with you.

  30. Deion is a cleaner version of Urban when taken into account the kind of recruits he would bring in. Both would recruit at a similar level, but one has a much better image at the moment. I don’t think many would consider Deion a sleaze bag (as a coach at least).

  37. RvW said no restrictions in the first trimester, reasonable medical restrictions in the second, and that states could ban it in the third so long as there were exceptions for health and safety of the mother. I think I made a compelling argument of why this should not be left up to the states, but if Europe is your model then what European countries have left abortion up to their regional governments?

  38. "You ask me to cook you a meal, but you don't let me pick the groceries" - Bill Parcells This is just me, but I would give Mickey Joseph the job. Keep the unity together (in house/players/commits) and give a 4-year deal around 18-19 mil, with motivation to renegotiate / offer / extend contract handsomely should there be noticeable success trending upward. Like we do and everybody does. I would let MJ retain who he want to retain (Busch, Applewhite, Beckton, Fischer for examples) and recruit assistant coaches he would want to be surrounded by that he thinks would be good for his team's success in the B1G (OC/OL/DL/LB/DC?). Mickey is not coaching the football team for his job. But, if he gets a contract to coach for his job/livelihood, he will definitely bring in his people to be successful at Nebraska. I mean, one week in and he fired Chins - if that means anything at all. Unless you have been coaching successfully in this conference, you don't have any more experience than what we currently have. I don't care what divisions you are at right now (P5/G5/FCS)..... this conference (B1G) is just a different beast that wants you to play by their football rules. Even Lincoln Riley would probably be frustrated and angry here and win just 7-8 games a year at best. IMHO Mickey is the guy. Even if he doesn't get the job by end of season. He will though, if upset Illinois, Minnesota and Iowa. No question.

  39. I'm referring explicitly to the original framework of the Roe v Wade ruling. This is absolutely not a state's right issue, and that has been made abundantly clear. States are literally trying to prosecutor people for getting an abortion in another state. Protection needs to be at the federal level to prevent that from happening. It will never be a settled issue until churches stop interfering in the government.
