  1. Thanks for the "update" that has zero information, Brandon. When is the last year that there wasn't actual attrition, let alone "rumblings"?

  2. WTF?? What's not to like? Walk-ons don't cost a scholie. Sometimes they really come through for us. Andy Janovich, Spencer Long, Stewart Bradley are three from the not so distant past. Several starters during our epic run in the 90s were walk-ons. And we've done extremely well with walk-on kickers and punters. Alex Henery and Sam Koch come to mind. I wish we had a couple more walk-on kickers on the roster right now! I applaud ALL Husker walk-ons for their sacrifice and commitment they put in to suit up as Huskers. Not just the ones we see on Saturday, but also those who toil in relative anonymity for their chance to contribute.

  3. Why is anyone talking about competing with Clemson? I just want us to beat the teams we have out-recruited the past 8 seasons.

  5. I heard that we are on the verge of loosing a whole class. Most of them are giving up football too. Gotta question what the staff is doing wrong here. Who lets graduation get in the way of building a football team.

  7. Did some digging from reporters of other teams involved in his recruitment, here are the latest updates from them: 10/15 South Car: Has reportedly made some progress in his academic standing however is not guaranteed to be a qualifier as of right now. Hints at a commitment coming and appears SC is team to beat and would probably take his commitment. 10/16 Auburn: Auburn didn't ask/invite him to visit on 9/28, he asked them if he could attend the game and they said he could. They have three LB's committed and are likely full there. 10/17 South Car: A decision later this week is possible but won't likely be SC. Academic concerns are too big that SC won't take a commitment. They only have 4 spots left and can't afford that risk.

  8. These same things have been discussed on here over and over again. Those 4* players that Riley brought in are not on campus due to transferring or not qualifying. You also have to take into account that we are now running a no huddle spread offense compared to a huddle up pro style offense. Complete changes were made. The few good players that were left over didn't even get drafted. What talent did he leave us with? Comparing us to Alabama is foolish at this point. All the talent is down South - check who has been winning for the past 20 years....No other coach is going to come into Nebraksa and get us to relevance in 3 years. We can't keep turning over coaches - we will never be successful that way. Frost needs a minimum of 5 years to show what he can do.

  9. I have no issue with ads on the site under the idea of making enough revenue to keep HB operating, but a number of topics have ads in the middle of threads, and that's a bit too intrusive. Top of the page and along the margin on the right is fine, because it doesn't interfere with the actual use of the site. Also, ads reloading at the top of pages are shifting/scrolling the page; it's terribly distracting when attempting to write a post, particularly when the page scrolls past the reply box.

  15. You know what's funny about that time frame? It featured fewer walkons than we had during the 80s & 90s.

  16. otKeep believing that. Riley actually recruited a lot of talent....they all left when Frost got hired...I love coach Frost, but a lot of his asst coaches have no business coaching in the B10. They are all his friends and pressure will be put on him to send them away. I think Scott should keep his mouth shut about how he is gonna dominate the B10. He is so enamored with skill position guys he has forgotten that every football team starts on the OL and DL. Especially in the B10!

  19. Just wondering why huskers fans only gave Mike Riley three years but they are willing to give Frost the full seven on his contract? Right now Riley in year 2 would kick the crap out of Frost in year 2, not even close.

  25. The new owner is the Mike Riley of Huskerboard. He's destroying a good thing and making a nice buck doing it. Mike didn't care about Nebraska and the new owner doesn't give a bleep about this board. This site is almost unusable now.

  28. Imagine bashing a kid for going to their dream school and sacrificing a whole lot. Many of these kids get offers from schools like Wyoming and South Dakota State, but they just love this school and team so much that they will work their butts off and pay for school them selves to try and accomplish their dreams of stepping on that field and being a husker. Walk-Ons have my upmost respect.

  30. Why does it matter whether she’s a veteran or not? I haven’t read any of the stuff on this but I get tired of people using “he/she is a veteran” to try to defend them or suggest they’re immune to scrutiny, unless the subject is related to one of their areas of expertise.

  32. I'll add this: as someone who has played a lot of sports and done some coaching as well, I'll tell you that it's a hell of a lot easier to start with a blank slate and coach them to do it your way than it is to coach players who have been coached a certain way, or developed poor habits. A lot of times, they'll do it the right way in practice, but then they'll revert back to their old habits during games.

  34. I agree. I’ve never really bought into the fast paced high scoring offense stresses your own defense because they get tired, etc. I don’t think it has to be that way. these players should be in outstanding physical condition plus with rotating in a good two-deep and all the media timeouts there should be plenty of time to get a breather.

  35. I'm probably a broken record here. But genuinely asking: What is this board's theory as to why Northwestern's linebackers know where to be and why they tackle so well? Because they're so talented?
    2 points
  36. Not to derail the thread much, but I also want to point out the gap between certain recruiting rankings. For example, on paper the gap between Nebraska at #24 and #19 Washington might not seem like much. 5 spots. But they have more than double the number of 4-star players, 41 (and one 5-star) such players compared to our 20. Meanwhile the gap between #24 Nebraska and #34 Kentucky is five 4-star players. Talent is overwhelmingly concentrated amongst the top.

  37. Not sure if such a thing exists, but I'd love to see an adjusted recruiting rankings taking attrition into account. My bet would be that after you account for the massive amounts of attrition that we've had the past 3-5 classes, our recruiting "ranking" would be pretty damn poor...

  39. Rewatch was brutal, the 40 minute version is on youtube for now. We had 14 plays on their side of the 50 on our first 2 drives. Just stupid things - illegal substitution, a bad block in the back on a huge play. I think by the time Hixson got steamrolled in the second quarter the DT was just living in his head, he was schooling him from the second drive on. Early on we were moving the ball fairly well, but then we'd shoot ourselves in the foot with sacks and penalties. There is no reason to score less than 24 or so on that defense. And then once we lost Wan'Dale it was over, nobody else was stepping up.

  40. That wasn't the full quote "When things aren't going as well as you want them to, you start questioning everything," Frost said. "Usually as a coach, you want to question and keep improving, but doubting and changing what you do is usually the worst thing you can do. We know our schemes on both sides work. They've worked for a long time. "We have to get better at them. We have to keep recruiting better players to run them. We love the guys on our team. We're going to keep coaching them and trying to sacrifice of ourselves to make them as good as they can be. I appreciate the support. Nobody wants it to work more than us."

  41. Moos is right about needing a lot more talent if we're going to compete with the Clemsons of the world. This is what everyone says to justify getting curbstomped by teams we have have a talent advantage over. Logically it just doesn't follow.

  43. A story I know well, there once was a small town high school football team who had never made it to state. Though they had big boys, fast boys, and smart boys over the years they never won more than 2 games in a season. One veteran observer who had just witnessed another bitter defeat coolly stated "this town pisses away more talent than the Dallas Cowboys". Another fan was heard saying " Those boys sure need help. " One year a new Old Coach rolled into town. With an eagle eye he watched every athlete weigh in at the start of the year and began to guess each player's height and weight, never being off by more than an inch or 5lbs to the amazement of the Seniors. When practice started the boys could tell the hard work was geared right toward producing well conditioned football players. They could tell the plays were good, and the new blocking schemes were amazing. The old coach told the boys, "Every day out here is a battle. Every day you challenge yourself by going up against someone you dont know if you can beat." Then he said "Go home and tell your moms and dads that we are going to be good this year. Then come out here to practice and hit harder and work harder than you ever have to prove it to them. " And so the boys did tell the town that they were going to be good. And then they did go to practice and hit harder than they ever had. Boys started going home with ice wraps on their arms and legs. The weight program was instituted big time, 7AM. Players were going to get stronger throughout the season. Then came week one, the moment of truth against a worthy opponent and rival. The Old Coach said, if they could get this first win, the rest would follow but they had to do the things they learned in practice; everybody does their own job, and "Get it Done". It was a nail biter, but the neighboring rivals were sure stunned when they got beat by the perrennial doormat team and the Old Coach. After that, this team made history for the small town finishing at 10-2. So from 2-7 to 10-2 in one year with nothing but the addition of one Old Coach. You see there is something about the right coach which earns respect. And when the boys totally respect, and admire their coach they will run through a brick wall for him. And there is a bond that forms among teammates, to become like brothers. I think the real magic happens when the right coach is fortunate enough to meet up with the right players. Senior/ Junior players who are willing to go all out for the new guy, and win. Willing to go all out every day to set the example for the young guys.

  45. BIG ERN: “I find it amusing that some Nebraska fans feel we are supposed to win games against Minnesota etc. based on what?” Hope. Lots of hope. Based on how things used to be. Based upon what one hopes will be again... Based upon... “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” - Martin Luther King Jr “Hope is the last thing ever lost.” - Italian proverb “If it were not for hope, the heart would break.” - Thomas Fuller “It is because of hope that you suffer. It is through hope that you’ll change things.” - Maxime Lagacé “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” - Confucius “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” - Winston S. Churchill “Hope is medicine for a soul that’s sick and tired.” - Eric Swensson “The best bridge between despair and hope is a good night’s sleep.” - E. Joseph Cossman

  46. He has less vision than Mills. He just tries to outrun everyone and he gets zero yards after contact. He had made some nice plays but he's not tough and can't be counted on A couple thoughts on this statement. 1. Mill's vision has improved, but most of the time he has very little room to run. s#!tTY BLOCKING 2. Washington has great vision and moves, but is getting hit in the backfield on about 75% of his touches. s#!tTY BLOCKING 3. Both Mills and Washington's play calling the last two games has been odd. It like we are flip flopping what plays we should be running for these two. I think we are trying to trick our opponents, but of course you really cant when - s#!tTY BLOCKING 4. Not being able to move the db's from creeping up to the line, because we cant stretch the field hurts the running game. and of course s#!tTY BLOCKING

  48. That's great for Oklahoma, but pretend you're an 18 year old and Nebraska offers you and so does Nebraska and you want to play for NC are you really going to pick NU regardless of what they say and offer? Nebraska in the next few years is not going to sign a 5* four 4* and three 3* regardless of what we want. You don't think Frost is trying to sign classes like that? Of course he is, but those kids aren't coming so he has to get kids he has the opportunity to develop. I don't know why people on this board seem to think that the staff is just ignoring higher talent. They're not. Those kids are not coming to a 4-8 team plain and simple whether you're the best freaking recruiter in the country. They have better options. So, in the meantime we have to get the high rated kids we can and fill out a class with kids to develop to win games and prove to those high rated kids that Nebraska is worth attending to win. I point out the lack of talent on the OL now because that's what Riley left. If 4 years from now our OL is still total garbage I can look back and say it's Frost's fault for not getting better kids here. The OL talent issue is not because of Frost it is still plain and simple a Riley problem. A kid like Benhart is rarely going to come in and be able to play against two, three or four year starts in the B1G. The line will take more time to fix. Meanwhile the one Frost recruit on the OL has progressed this season into probably our best OL at the moment.
